Korean Stock Market SHOCKWAVE! Foreign Investors Trigger Panic?
Current Affairs 12 February 2026

Well, well, well, looks like the foreign investment love affair with Korean stocks took a bit of a breather in January. After a pretty strong December, we saw a shift – a slight one, mind you – to net selling, according to the Bank of Korea's latest figures. Not exactly a fire sale, but definitely a change in tune.

The numbers tell the story: a net $50 million outflow from Korean equities last month. That's a far cry from the $1.19 billion pouring *in* during December. So, what gives? Turns out, it's mostly good ol' profit-taking. The KOSPI, that benchmark index we all keep an eye on, had a stellar January, jumping over 22%. Smart money decided to cash in a bit, and honestly, who can blame them? It's always a good idea to take some gains off the table.

However, it's not all doom and gloom for the Korean market. Foreign investors still have a hankering for those Korean bonds. They snapped up a cool $2.44 billion worth of them in January. Add that to the stock outflow, and you still end up with a net inflow of $2.39 billion into the Korean securities market overall. That's five months in a row of net foreign capital heading to the peninsula. Not bad at all.

A BOK official explained that the profit-taking in stocks overshadowed positive sentiment surrounding the semiconductor sector, which many had hoped would drive further gains. Always a gamble, isn't it? They also pointed out that bond inflows slowed down a bit as market interest rates started creeping up. Makes sense – higher rates often mean less attractive bond yields.

The won-dollar exchange rate also saw a bit more action in January, with daily volatility jumping up. Apparently, increased overseas investments by Korean investors and the National Pension Service tweaking its overseas equity allocation played a role in that. It’s all connected, you see? A bit of this, a bit of that, and suddenly you've got a shift in the market. This latest BOK report certainly gives us plenty to chew on as we watch how the Korean market navigates the rest of the year. Time will tell if this is a short-term blip or the start of a bigger trend.
