Big news for European travelers! Lufthansa City Airlines officially kicked off operations from its brand new Frankfurt hub just a few days ago, on February 9th, 2026. The inaugural flight, VL946, took off to Manchester, signaling a significant boost to Lufthansa's short-haul network out of Germany’s busiest airport. This isn't just about adding more flights; it's about improving connectivity and giving passengers more options, which is always a win in my book.
Lufthansa's Frankfurt Hub SHAKE-UP! Is YOUR Flight...
Frankfurt is already Lufthansa's biggest and most strategically important airport, so it makes perfect sense that they'd choose it to become a major base for their youngest airline. This will really reinforce their short-haul feeder network across Europe. Think more direct routes, smoother connections, and those shiny new Airbus A320neos buzzing around. Let's be honest, nobody wants to spend all day in connecting airports when you could be at your destination. I remember one particularly awful layover in Charles de Gaulle that lasted nearly 8 hours... shudder.
While Munich remains Lufthansa City Airlines’ original home base (they launched there in summer 2024), Frankfurt is now a major operational center, allowing for more efficient expansion of their European short-haul network. The airline will be operating more European destinations directly from Frankfurt, which means fewer connections through other Lufthansa Group carriers. Less hassle for everyone!
The Frankfurt base is intended to be a year-round operation, and they’re planning on adding several new destinations starting this summer. We're talking London Heathrow, Stockholm, Bilbao, Hamburg, Helsinki, Ibiza, Marseille, and even Bucharest. However, it's a phased roll-out, and it all depends on having enough aircraft available. Makes sense – you can’t fly planes you don't have! They're projecting a fleet of seven Airbus A320neos based in Frankfurt by September 2026. That's a decent jump from the 13 they already operate out of Munich. In 2025 alone, they operated almost 16,000 services and carried around two million passengers, so they're definitely not messing around.
Since joining Star Alliance in September 2025, Lufthansa City Airlines has also been giving passengers access to frequent flyer benefits and seamless connections across partner airlines. This is a big deal for those Frankfurt passengers connecting to long-haul flights, making the whole experience a bit smoother and more rewarding. Plus, they're hiring! About 60 employees are already based in Frankfurt, and they plan to bring in another 80 cockpit crew members and around 200 cabin crew. That's great news for the local economy and for anyone looking to break into the aviation industry.
Overall, this expansion feels like a smart move for Lufthansa, and a definite win for European travelers. More routes, better connections, and a focus on modern aircraft – what’s not to like? I'm certainly looking forward to seeing how the Frankfurt hub develops over the next few months.
