UN Rights Chief Under Fire! France Demands Ouster Over Israel Remarks!
Current Affairs 13 February 2026

France is officially calling for the removal of UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese, citing "outrageous and reprehensible remarks" regarding Israel's military actions in Gaza. The move comes after Albanese repeatedly labeled the conflict a "genocide," and advocated for a full arms embargo and suspension of trade agreements with the country. It’s a pretty significant escalation, especially considering the already fraught international relations surrounding the conflict.

UN Rights Chief Under Fire! France Demands Ouster ...

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot stated that Paris condemns Albanese’s comments, alleging they target "Israel as a people and as a nation." France intends to push for her immediate resignation during the upcoming UNHRC session on February 23rd. This isn't just a French issue, either. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has echoed the call for Albanese to step down, and the Geneva-based NGO 'UN Watch' has praised France’s stance. They're actively urging other nations to support her ouster, describing her remarks as “hate and demonizing Israel,” which, they argue, undermines the credibility of the UN.

Albanese, appointed by the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in March 2022, hasn't backed down. She dismissed the accusations as “shameful and defamatory,” claiming her statements at a recent conference in Qatar didn't portray Israel as the "enemy of humanity." In a post on X (formerly Twitter), she clarified her position, stating, "The true common enemy of humanity is THE SYSTEM that has facilitated the genocide in Palestine, including the financial capital that funds it, the algorithms that obscure it, and the weapons that enable it.” It’s a pretty strong statement, and it definitely puts her in a controversial light.

Beyond the "genocide" label, Albanese has also expressed concerns about the future of Gaza and the West Bank. In an interview with France 24, she stated her belief that "the plan to fully destroy Gaza continues" and denounced Israeli plans to tighten control over the West Bank. Furthermore, she's previously criticized EU leadership, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, for what she sees as a failure to exert sufficient pressure on Israel. It's worth remembering that Albanese has been under scrutiny for quite some time, facing accusations of anti-Semitism and bias – even leading to sanctions from the US.

The backdrop to all of this, of course, is the devastating Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, which saw approximately 1,200 people killed and 251 hostages taken. Israel's subsequent military campaign in Gaza has resulted in nearly 72,000 Palestinian deaths and over 171,000 wounded, according to reports. Whether Albanese's statements are indeed "outrageous and reprehensible," as France claims, or a legitimate critique of a complex and tragic situation, is clearly a matter of intense debate. What's certain is that this situation is far from resolved, and France's call for her resignation is only going to intensify the scrutiny on her role and the UN's handling of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
