Hold on to your hats, folks, because it looks like we're going back to Sanctuary! Blizzard just dropped a massive surprise: a brand-new content expansion for Diablo II: Resurrected, the updated version of the classic PC game. And get this – it’s been a whopping 25 years since the last major update! I remember spending countless hours glued to my monitor back in the day, battling demons and trying to find that elusive Zod rune. Talk about nostalgia!
Diablo II Returns! New Expansion & Class SHOCK the...
This isn't some minor patch, either. The "Reign of the Warlock" DLC, as it's called, brings a whole new playable class to the table, along with endgame challenges that sound absolutely brutal, and some much-needed quality-of-life improvements to inventory management. While technically this content isn't headed to the original 2000 release, Resurrected *is* a faithful recreation – like a lovingly restored vintage car with all the modern bells and whistles. This is a content drop many of us have been dreaming about since the "Lord of Destruction" expansion back in… well, 2001.
The headliner here is, without a doubt, the Warlock. Blizzard describes this new class as being able to "command forbidden power," wielding "forbidden arts, bridling hellfire and shadow, and dominating demons." I mean, come on, that sounds ridiculously cool! Apparently, these Warlocks are leveraging their (ahem) elevated status to hunt down lost knowledge, all in an effort to continue the legacy of Horazon. The skill tree boasts three distinct paths, meaning there will be plenty of customization options to explore. Get ready to delve deep!
And the Warlock love doesn't stop there. Blizzard is spreading the dark magic around! The Warlock class is also slated to arrive in Diablo IV with the "Lord of Hatred" expansion on April 28th, and even Diablo Immortal will be getting a free-to-play Warlock in a June update. Talk about cross-game synergy!
Beyond the new class, "Reign of the Warlock" is revamping the late-game Terror Zones. Now you can "terrorize" specific Acts, collect statues from bosses to summon a "Colossal Ancient boss," and face Heralds of Terror stalking you on Hell difficulty. Sounds like Blizzard really wants to give hardcore players a run for their money.
But it's not all about the pain. Blizzard is also throwing in some welcome quality-of-life improvements. A loot filter! Yes! Finally, easier item sorting! And the ability to stack items within Stash Tabs! Bless you, Blizzard, bless you. My inventory thanks you. Seriously, these are the kinds of tweaks that can make a huge difference in the overall enjoyment of the game.
To cap things off, Blizzard is also releasing an "Infernal Edition" of Diablo II Resurrected on Steam for the first time, which includes the new Reign of the Warlock DLC for $40. For those who already own Resurrected, the DLC can be purchased separately for $25 on Battle.net or Xbox. So, are you ready to embrace the darkness? I know I am. See you in Sanctuary!
