MILAN – A nail-biting finish in the men's 1,000-meter Short track at the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics saw South Korea's Rim Jong-un snatch a bronze medal, a welcome victory and the nation's first podium appearance at these games. The atmosphere at the Milano Ice Skating Arena was electric as the 18-year-old Rim navigated a chaotic race, ultimately securing third place behind Jens van 't Wout of the Netherlands and Sun Long of China.
Rim Jong-un Stuns Fans With Bronze Win: Unexpected...
It was a strategic race for Rim, who seemed content to hang back, observing the frantic jostling for position at the front of the pack. With nine laps to cover, it's often a game of patience and calculated bursts of speed. But even with just two laps remaining, Rim found himself in last place among the five finalists, a position that would make most skaters panic. I've seen so many races lost in those final moments due to impulsive decisions, but Rim stayed remarkably calm.
Then came the final corner, and that's where the magic happened. Rim executed a daring outside push, a move that's as risky as it is potentially rewarding. He extended his blade at the finish line in a photo-finish moment that had everyone holding their breath. The official times confirmed the drama: Van 't Wout took gold with 1:24.537, Sun grabbed silver in 1:24.565, and Rim clinched bronze with 1:24.611. Just fractions of a second separated them!
Perhaps the biggest surprise was William Dandjinou of Canada, the pre-race favorite who led for much of the race, finishing just outside the medals in 1:24.671. It just goes to show, anything can happen in Short track. For South Korea, this bronze is a significant achievement, marking their 54th short track medal overall. It’s a discipline where they've historically excelled, so breaking the ice with this medal is a big relief for the team.
However, it wasn't all smooth skating for the South Korean team on Thursday. Rim was the only skater from his country to make it to a final. Hwang Dae-heon faced a penalty in the quarterfinals of the men's 1,000m, while Shin Dong-min's run ended in the semifinals. Over in the women's 500m, Kim Gil-li and Lee So-yeon didn’t advance beyond the quarterfinals, and Choi Min-jeong was eliminated in the semifinals. Still, Rim's bronze has undoubtedly boosted morale, and hopefully, it'll set the stage for further success in the remaining events.
