Greenland on Edge: Nordic Warplanes Launch Drills – What's the REAL Threat?!
Current Affairs 13 February 2026

Nordic nations are gearing up for a major military exercise in Greenland, a move that comes against a backdrop of simmering tensions with the U.S. over the icy island. Both Sweden and Denmark have officially confirmed their participation in Arctic Sentry, a NATO operation strategically focused on Greenland and the broader Arctic region.

Greenland on Edge: Nordic Warplanes Launch Drills ...

This isn't just your run-of-the-mill military drill. It's happening as relations between some European nations and the U.S., specifically under former President Trump, have become strained. Remember Trump's rather persistent, and some might say bizarre, pursuit of acquiring Greenland? Well, the aftershocks are still being felt.

Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen, speaking with reporters before the Munich Security Conference, made it clear that Denmark is taking this seriously. He announced the deployment of four of their cutting-edge F-35 fighter jets, emphasizing that these U.S.-made aircraft would "strengthen the overall presence in the region." It's worth noting that the U.S. is also expected to participate in the exercise, but the optics of this deployment are…interesting.

Sweden isn't sitting this one out either. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson previously confirmed that Stockholm would be sending its JAS 39 Gripen aircraft to "the area around Iceland and Greenland." And it’s not just air power; the Swedish military has also indicated that ground troops, though an unspecified number, will be deployed to the island as well. That certainly signals a commitment to the region.

The root of this tension, of course, lies in Trump's rather audacious attempts to, essentially, buy Greenland. He even floated the idea of using military force at one point, though thankfully, he walked that back. EU nations, understandably, weren't thrilled, firmly stating that "Greenland belongs to its people" and demanding respect for its sovereignty. I remember when this all unfolded, and it was frankly baffling to watch. Like something out of a geopolitical satire.

Later, Trump hinted at a "framework of a future deal," suggesting that the U.S. might seek control over portions of Greenland by designating them as sovereign military base areas. His rationale? Containing Russian and Chinese influence in the Arctic. Moscow, for its part, has stated it has no vested interest in the dispute, but also warned that it would respond to any militarization of Greenland and safeguard its own Arctic interests. It's a complex situation, to say the least, and Arctic Sentry is only adding another layer to this already intricate geopolitical tapestry.
