MILAN – Forget energy gels and protein bars. For Korean athletes competing in the upcoming Milano Cortina Games, performance enhancement comes in a far more comforting, and arguably more effective, form: a taste of home. Forget the standard Olympic Village fare; Team Korea's got a secret weapon, and it's delivered piping hot, twice a day.
Korean Athletes' Secret Weapon Revealed: "Rice Pow...
It's all thanks to a meticulously planned initiative, a program that's been quietly running since the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics, and really hit its stride at the 2014 Sochi Winter Games. The Korean Sport & Olympic Committee understands that familiarity breeds success, and that means providing athletes with the foods they know and love, especially when they're thousands of miles away from home and under immense pressure.
This isn't just about sending a box of ramen. For the Milano Cortina Games, dedicated cooking facilities have been established in Milan, Cortina, and Livigno. I had the chance to visit the Milan facility, tucked away in a unassuming guesthouse. The airy space, with its glass walls overlooking a leafy courtyard, felt more like a well-appointed restaurant kitchen than a temporary Olympic commissary. And the operation runs like clockwork.
According to Lee Dahyun, a manager at Korea's national training centre, the logistics are remarkably efficient. "It only takes 15 or 20 minutes from the kitchens to each Olympic Village," she explained, as I watched chefs carefully portion food from large trays into perfectly arranged lunch boxes. Soup thermoses are packed alongside, and then the whole operation is dispatched for delivery.
"It shows how we think food is really important," Lee said with a smile. What started as simply fulfilling athlete requests has blossomed into "an essential project for Team Korea." It's a testament to the power of comfort food, I suppose. The organizers know it can make a real difference.
The lengths they go to are impressive. Months before the Games even begin, the Team Korea Nutrition and Catering Support Centre kicks into high gear. Starting in October, they begin shipping essential Korean ingredients, like kimchi, to the Olympic venues. A container ship laden with provisions set sail in November and docked in Italy in January. The rest – fresh meat, vegetables, and fruit – are sourced locally in Italy. So, a "two-track" system ensures the best of both worlds.
They've even developed self-heating lunch boxes, a particularly ingenious solution for athletes competing in the frigid temperatures of Livigno. "Usually athletes cannot eat our food immediately, due to their competition and training schedules, but using our heated lunch boxes they can have delicious and warm food," Lee explained. It's a small detail, but a vital one.
In a world of high-tech training and cutting-edge equipment, it's refreshing to see Team Korea recognizing the fundamental importance of a good, familiar meal. It may just be the edge they need to bring home the gold.
