YouTube horror is officially having a moment, folks. Following in the footsteps of successes like Markiplier's "Iron Lung" and Dylan Clark's "Portrait of God," another horror project birthed from the platform is making the leap to feature film. I'm talking about "It Visits Me," based on the viral short from the filmmaking duo Cameron Gallagher and Jeremiah Lewis. Get ready, because production kicks off next week!
YouTube Horror Sensation "It Visits Me" Film?! Fan...
The original short, already creeping towards 100,000 views (and likely more by the time you're reading this), clearly struck a nerve with viewers. And now, Gallagher and Lewis are doubling down, expanding their unsettling vision into a full-length feature. Gallagher is taking the helm as writer-director, while Lewis will be producing and co-writing. Seems like a good division of labor for this ambitious project.
So, what’s the movie about? "It Visits Me" centers around Layla, a young woman trapped back in her childhood home. That’s already a little unnerving for many of us, right? But the real kicker is that Layla's sister, Abigail, claims to be visited by an angel. Of course, with this being a horror film, I suspect this "angel" isn’t bringing glad tidings and good cheer. I’m betting it's much, much darker.
Sara Hallisey and Hayley Gasbarro are set to star as the sisters, with a cameo appearance by genre vet Toby Poser. The visual style will be crafted by Adam Muro, who, impressively, is fresh off his work on "Claws," starring Thomas Middleditch and Jess Weixler. That's some serious talent bolstering this indie project. I’m keen to see how Muro’s experience translates to the film’s aesthetic.
Gallagher and Lewis are clearly aiming high, positioning "It Visits Me" as a slow-burn psychological horror experience. They’re drawing inspiration from films like "Saint Maud," "The Lodge," and even the classic "Possession," all of which are known for their intense atmosphere and explorations of faith and madness. That's a bold move and it signals that they have serious aspirations in the horror space.
This isn't Gallagher and Lewis's first rodeo, either. They’ve collaborated on numerous YouTube horror shorts, honing their skills and building an audience. Gallagher’s short "2 Players Required" even landed on Screambox and Bloody Disgusting's "Bloody Bites." It's clear they've been putting in the work, paying their dues in the short-film trenches.
And what motivates Gallagher? "I’ve always found religious horror to be the scariest," he says. "And being able to bring something both scary and satisfying on a character level is what I’m drawn to most as a director." That emphasis on character is key; hopefully, that helps "It Visits Me" elevate beyond just jump scares and into something truly memorable. I, for one, will be keeping a close eye on this project. Good luck to the team – and may the "angel" be ever in your favor.
