Avowed, Obsidian's take on a first-person fantasy RPG, has quietly become something really special. It’s been a year since it first landed, and I've got to say, the game has evolved considerably since its February 2025 launch. I remember playing it back then and, while the core gameplay was promising, it definitely felt a little rough around the edges. But Obsidian hasn't just been sitting on their laurels; they've clearly been listening to the community and working hard to polish and expand the experience.
Avowed Just Got HUGE! You Won't Believe What's Cha...
The journey started, predictably enough, with a series of patches focused on "Smoothing the Edges." These early updates addressed technical hiccups, balanced gameplay, and generally made the overall experience more stable and enjoyable. It was a good start, showing that Obsidian was paying attention and committed to fixing those initial pain points. But the real game-changers came later.
One of the biggest additions has to be New Game Plus. For those of us who sunk dozens (or hundreds, no judgment!) of hours into the initial playthrough, this was a welcome way to revisit the Living Lands with our fully powered characters, facing tougher challenges and uncovering new secrets. But Obsidian didn’t stop there. They've also introduced modifiers for New Game Plus, really letting you tailor the experience to your liking. Want a ridiculously difficult run? Go for it! Want something a little more relaxed and focused on the story? That's an option too.
And then there's the introduction of non-human playable races! Aumaua and Dwarves finally join the fray, adding a ton of replayability and role-playing potential. Seriously, who *doesn't* want to play as a hulking Aumaua wielding a massive greatsword? It's a testament to Obsidian's commitment to delivering on player requests. I think it just adds so much depth to the world to have those other options.
But the updates don't stop at content. They've also been pushing the technical envelope, with support for DLSS 4.5 and the promise of 6x Multi Frame Generation for upcoming RTX 50-series cards. This is huge for PC players who want to squeeze every last drop of performance out of their rigs. Plus, they even added an Arachnophobia Mode – a thoughtful inclusion that demonstrates Obsidian's awareness and consideration for players with specific phobias.
The Anniversary Update, released this past February, was really the cherry on top. Photo Mode is a fantastic addition for those of us who love to capture the stunning visuals of the Living Lands. Honestly, I've spent way too much time fiddling with camera angles and filters! Bottom line? Avowed is a much richer and more compelling game than it was at launch. If you haven't checked it out lately, or if you're a newcomer jumping in with the PlayStation 5 release, now is definitely the time to explore the ever-evolving world of Eora.
