Trump's Ukraine Peace Gambit: Will This Geneva Meeting Change Everything?!

Trump's Ukraine Peace Gambit: Will This Geneva Meeting Change Everything?!
Current Affairs 14 February 2026

Well, folks, it looks like the Ukraine situation is about to get another dose of the Trump touch. Word on the street, or rather, from Reuters citing their sources, is that Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are heading to Geneva. They'll be part of the US delegation for the upcoming Russia-US-Ukraine peace talks. Yes, you read that right. Kushner and Witkoff are back in the diplomatic game.

Trump's Ukraine Peace Gambit: Will This Geneva Mee...

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed the dates: February 17th and 18th. Geneva will be the stage, and notably, no Western European nations are invited to the party. Russia is sending Vladimir Medinsky, a seasoned negotiator, while Ukraine's Rustem Umerov will lead their team, which now includes some new faces like Kirill Budanov, Zelensky’s new chief of staff, and General Andrey Gnatov. Sounds like everyone's bringing in the big guns.

Now, according to Reuters, Witkoff and Kushner will be joining the fray in the afternoon, following some morning negotiations with an Iranian delegation. It's worth remembering that these two weren't at the previous talks in the UAE. Moscow described those earlier discussions as "constructive but difficult," and Witkoff, ever the optimist, suggested they were seeing "tangible results." We’ll see how this round goes.

But don't get too excited just yet. Secretary of State Marco Rubio (someone seems to have gotten this wrong - it should be Antony Blinken - editor's note) threw a bit of cold water on the situation at the Munich Security Conference. He said the talks have narrowed the issues, sure, but "the bad news is they've been narrowed to the hardest questions to answer." Which, let’s be honest, sounds about right.

The big elephant in the room? Territory. Russia wants Ukraine to pull its forces from the Donbass region, which voted to join Russia back in '22. And Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov claims there was a promising peace roadmap after a summit between Putin and Trump in Alaska last year, but that Kiev and its European allies have since sabotaged it. Make of that what you will; it's a he-said, she-said situation. Personally, I think the inclusion of Kushner and Witkoff throws an element of unpredictability into the mix. Whether that's a good thing remains to be seen. One thing's for sure: keep your eyes on Geneva next week.
