Okay, Rainbow Six Siege fans, brace yourselves. Solid Snake is officially slithering his way into the game as a brand new Operator next month. Yes, *the* Solid Snake, of Metal Gear Solid fame. And yes, voiced by the legendary David Hayter. That’s a big win for nostalgia right there.
Rainbow Six Siege Snubs Snake?! Fans FURIOUS! What...
But here's a fun fact you might not know: Ubisoft's developers actually considered going even *further* with the Metal Gear Solid homage. I'm talking about the iconic cardboard box. The one that has fooled countless guards over the years. Can you imagine the possibilities in Siege? Apparently, the idea hit a snag.
According to Josh Mills, Rainbow Six Siege’s creative director, the cardboard box concept was ultimately scrapped. And the reason why is actually pretty simple, and speaks volumes about the dedication (or maybe obsession?) of Siege players. These guys know their maps. Intimately. They know every nook and cranny, every possible hiding spot. I mean, *I* thought I knew the maps, but apparently not well enough to rock a cardboard box strat.
“Our players already know every inch of every map, and among the team we have a saying, Operator's eyes don’t lie," Mills told IGN. "So, if there were suddenly a box in the corner of a room on any given map our players would promptly shoot that box." That’s some cold, hard truth right there. He's not wrong. I can picture it now: Box appears. Box gets immediately riddled with bullets. Snake facepalms somewhere in the afterlife.
The whole Metal Gear Solid crossover was teased last month with Sam Fisher (of Splinter Cell fame) getting a Codec Call, which, if you're a fan of either franchise, was a pretty cool moment. And beyond just Snake, Operation Silent Hunt, launching on March 3rd, is bringing a Gray Fox skin for Jackal and a Meryl skin for Ash. So there’s plenty of MGS love to go around.
Mills added that they’re also introducing a limited-time 4v4 "Redacted" event where Snake and Zero lead a team to recover stolen data. Plus, there's a new "Last Assignment" mission for Dual Front that's specifically designed as a nod to long-time Metal Gear Solid fans. It sounds like they’re really going all-in on this.
Look, Rainbow Six Siege has had some pretty wild crossovers before – Attack on Titan, The Boys, even Splinter Cell with the addition of Sam Fisher as Zero way back in 2020. But bringing in *Solid Snake*? That's a whole different level. Even without the cardboard box, this is shaping up to be one of the most interesting and unexpected additions to the game in a long time. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to start practicing my Snake voice.
