Bubba Wallace Crushed After 'Best' Daytona 500, Still Celebrates Tyler Reddick
Bubba Wallace Heartbreak! Daytona Dream Dashed - W...
"I thought this was our week," a clearly dejected Bubba Wallace told FOX Sports after the checkered flag waved at the 2026 Daytona 500. Standing beside his No. 23 23XI Racing Toyota, hands planted on his hips, the disappointment was etched all over his face. You could see the internal struggle, the frustration of coming so close yet again to capturing the sport's biggest prize.
His teammate, Tyler Reddick, however, was celebrating. Reddick clinched the victory, delivering a massive win for team owners Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin. For Wallace, though, despite leading a race-high 40 of the 200 laps, the day ended with a 10th-place finish. And while a top ten at Daytona is nothing to sneeze at, especially given the chaos that unfolded on the track, Wallace's aspirations were undoubtedly higher.
"Man, I don't know what to say," Wallace admitted to FOX Sports' Regan Smith on pit road, his voice laced with a mixture of disappointment and graciousness. "Hats off to the [No.] 45 group. I don't want my emotions to take away from the monumental day they just accomplished. Happy birthday, MJ. That's a massive birthday present." It was a classy move, acknowledging Reddick's victory and the significance for the team, even in his own moment of heartbreak.
Wallace has built a reputation as a superspeedway ace, consistently showing strength at Daytona and Talladega. In his 18 career starts at Daytona, he's racked up an impressive five top-5s and seven top-10s, including this latest result. The Daytona 500 in particular has been a source of both triumph and heartbreak. He's secured three top-5 finishes in the "Great American Race," including two agonizing runner-up spots in 2018 and 2022. It's a testament to his skill on these tracks, but also a reminder of how elusive that victory has been.
“I thought this was our week," Wallace repeated, the words hanging in the air. "The best 500 I’ve ever had, and [to] come up short, sucks. But couldn't be more proud of the team.” You could see the genuine pride he felt in his team's performance, despite the personal disappointment.
"Led a lot of laps, lap leader, I believe. It was a good day for us, but damn," he continued, before offering a final, resolute statement: "Try again next year." That's the spirit of a racer. Despite the sting of defeat, the focus immediately shifts to the next challenge, the next opportunity. And knowing Bubba Wallace, he'll be back at Daytona next year, hungry to finally capture that elusive Daytona 500 crown.
