Ali Türkkan and co-driver Oytun Albayrak brought home some serious hardware and valuable points from the icy battleground of Rally Sweden, snagging a top-five finish in the Junior WRC category. Not bad at all for their season debut, considering the challenges they faced.

Ali Türkkan's Rally Comeback: What Happens Next?!

The 2026 Rally Sweden, kicking off the World Rally Championship (WRC), was the proving ground for Türkkan and Albayrak. This dynamic duo jumped right out of the gate, seizing the lead early in the Junior WRC. Unfortunately, rallying rarely goes exactly as planned. A series of unfortunate events, including a hefty 40-minute penalty, meant they had to claw their way back just to secure a points-scoring finish within that top five. It's a tough sport, and sometimes, even the best drivers hit snags.

Rally Sweden, as any motorsports enthusiast knows, is notorious for its unforgiving ice and snow-covered stages. It demands both immense courage and pinpoint precision from the drivers. Türkkan and Albayrak certainly showed that they had the speed, dominating the very first stage with the fastest time in their category – a pretty substantial lead, I might add! But, as the saying goes, "to finish first, first you must finish." On the fifth stage, disaster struck when they went off-road while leading. This resulted in a significant time loss, forcing them to retire from that stage. Adding insult to injury, their late arrival at the following stage start added that aforementioned 40-minute penalty. Ouch!

Undeterred, the Turkish team showed some serious grit. They restarted the race the next day, showcasing their impressive pace by winning four stages. Talk about a comeback! These stage wins were crucial, propelling them to that well-deserved top-five finish in the Junior WRC standings. Every point matters in a championship battle, and these guys know it.

Türkkan and Albayrak have their sights set on the World Championship, plain and simple. They narrowly missed out on third place in the 2025 Junior WRC season, so they're hungry to make history and secure Turkey's first world championship in this category in 2026. The Junior WRC is a breeding ground for future stars, having launched the careers of numerous world champions. Judging by their speed in Sweden, their ambition is certainly within reach. I've seen talented drivers come and go, and these two have something special.

The team's weapon of choice is a Ford Fiesta Rally3, sporting a fresh new design for 2026. It made its debut in Sweden and impressed many with its performance. Clearly, the team has put a lot of trust in their machine, and based on their performance, that trust seems well-placed.

Next up on the Junior WRC calendar is Rally Croatia, slated for April 9-12. The event will be held on asphalt surfaces, a completely different challenge than the icy Swedish stages. The season continues with Rally Portugal, Rally Finland, and the final showdown in Rally Chile. The stage wins and points earned in Sweden have given the team a solid foundation for the rest of the season.

Adding his thoughts, team coach Murat Bostancı acknowledged their strong start in Sweden, emphasizing the importance of those four stage wins and the points earned, despite the unfortunate time loss. He confirmed that the entire team is now fully focused on the upcoming Rally Croatia. The road to the championship is long, but these guys seem ready for the challenge.
