Hold on to your broomsticks, folks! A delightful new animated series for kids is brewing, and it's got some serious star power attached. Michael Sheen, the ever-charming actor known for "Good Omens," is joining forces with the talented Anna Lundberg ("Staged") and the hilarious Matt Lucas ("Wonka") for "Ivy Newt." This isn't your average Saturday morning cartoon; it sounds like it's aiming for something a bit more, and that's something I'm always excited about.

Animated Magic! Sheen, Lucas & Lundberg Join 'Ivy ...

The series, based on the popular "Ivy Newt" novella series by Irish children's author Derek Keilty and brought to life with illustrations by Magda Boll, will follow the adventures of a young and, dare I say, spirited witch named Ivy. We all know there's a bit of a witchy craze happening in media, but from what I gather, Ivy Newt will have its own identity. The press release promises wit, grit, and whimsy - a combination I'm totally here for.

Behind the magic is The Caretakers Company, a brand-new production label spearheaded by Joshua Friedman, a former Sony International executive. Friedman's got some impressive credits under his belt, including films like "Slaughterhouse Rulez" and the classic "My Best Friend’s Wedding." He's also got an Oscar-nominated short film, "The One Note Man," where Sir Ian McKellen lends his voice. So, the team has experience in telling stories with heart.

Daisy Aitkens ("You, Me and Him") is set to co-create and showrun the series. She's got experience working at Sky and the BBC, so she knows what it takes to create engaging content for a broad audience. It’s also reassuring to see some female leadership on a kids production, hopefully that translates into a character that resonates with girls and boys.

Friedman's vision for "Ivy Newt" is really interesting. He notes that kids today are growing up faster and facing some tough challenges. The aim, he says, is for Ivy to show young viewers that they can tackle anything life throws their way. It's a powerful message, and if delivered well, this series could be more than just entertainment; it could be genuinely inspiring.

Aitkens herself chimes in, acknowledging that kids "want a new hero." She also adds that "Ivy Newt stands out, swooping up young audiences by the broomstick.” Sounds like they have a strong sense of the market and what makes Ivy Newt special. Between the talented cast, the experienced production team, and the source material's existing fanbase, "Ivy Newt" has the potential to be a real hit. I'll be keeping an eye on this one!
