Khamenei's SHOCK Threat: Will This Sink US Relations?!
Current Affairs 17 February 2026

Tensions in the Middle East just ratcheted up a notch. Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has issued a sharp-edged warning directly to Donald Trump and, by extension, the entire United States, making some pretty bold claims about Iran's military capabilities. It's the kind of rhetoric that makes you sit up and pay attention, especially given the already volatile situation in the region.

Khamenei's SHOCK Threat: Will This Sink US Relatio...

Khamenei's comments, delivered via a series of posts on X, weren't exactly subtle. He directly addressed Trump's administration's surveillance of Iran's political activities and, perhaps more worryingly, its nuclear program. The Supreme Leader basically said that even the biggest, baddest military in the world – a not-so-veiled reference to the US – can be brought to its knees. "The strongest military force in the world may at times be struck so hard that it cannot get up again,” he posted.

But it was his specific mention of US warships that really raised eyebrows. Khamenei explicitly alluded to the American naval presence near Iranian waters, boasting that Iran has the technology to send those warships to a watery grave. “The Americans constantly say that they’ve sent a warship toward Iran. Of course, a warship is a dangerous piece of military hardware. However, more dangerous than that warship is the weapon that can send that warship to the bottom of the sea,” he declared. What exactly that weapon is, he didn't say. But the implication is clear – Iran believes it has something that can challenge US naval power.

It wasn’t all saber-rattling, though. Khamenei also took a jab at the US's past failures to destabilize the Islamic Republic, seemingly enjoying the irony of Trump acknowledging those failures himself. "The US President has said that for 47 years, the United States hasn't been able to eliminate the Islamic Republic. That is a good confession. I say, ‘You, too, will not be able to do this,’” Khamenei stated. A little bit of "we told you so," perhaps?

This all comes against a backdrop of already strained relations. Remember "Operation Midnight Hammer" from last year? That US operation aimed at countering Iran's nuclear ambitions just underscores how delicate this whole situation is. Trump's repeated threats of military intervention to curb Iran's nuclear ambitions haven’t exactly helped ease tensions. So, Khamenei’s latest pronouncements, while not entirely surprising, certainly don't paint a picture of de-escalation. It's a dangerous game of brinkmanship, and hopefully, cooler heads will prevail before things spiral out of control.
