A peculiar incident at the Winter Olympics has sparked controversy, involving a Swiss TV network, an Israeli bobsledder, and some very pointed commentary about the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Radio Télévision Suisse (RTS) pulled a clip from their website after a commentator, identified only as Renna, accused the athlete, Edelman, of "supporting the genocide in Gaza." Now, accusations of bias are flying from all sides.

The footage, which quickly went viral before RTS took it down, shows Renna making some pretty strong claims. According to reports, Renna quoted Edelman as calling the war the "most morally just" in history and even alleged he mocked a pro-Palestine demonstration. The commentator then contrasted Edelman's participation with the IOC's (International Olympic Committee) earlier actions against Ukrainian skeleton racer Vladyslav Heraskevych, who was sanctioned for showing support for athletes killed in the Russia-Ukraine war. Renna's conclusion? "This just goes to show that sport is obviously eminently political." A sentiment I think many would agree with.
RTS, in a statement to Deadline, confirmed the clip's authenticity but defended its removal, claiming the information, while factual, was "inappropriate for sports commentary due to its length." They said the journalist wanted to question the IOC’s policy, but the segment was simply too long for that format. Frankly, that sounds a bit like backpedaling to me. It feels like they realized they'd opened a can of worms.
Edelman, unsurprisingly, didn't take kindly to the broadcast, labeling it a "diatribe" on social media. He reposted a comment from Mike Huckabee, former White House Ambassador to Israel, who went even further, calling the RTS broadcast "Jew-hating" and accusing the commentator of "spewing bigotry and bile." These are obviously strong words, illustrating the raw emotions and divisions this issue has tapped into.
It's worth noting that Edelman, who was born in Massachusetts and identifies as an Orthodox Jew, recently told The Jewish Chronicle that his bobsled team has faced hostility, with one competitor allegedly calling them "baby killers." He responded to this hate with a question: "Who has the energy to hate strangers all day?" A fair point, I think.
The whole situation underscores the challenge of keeping politics out of sports, especially when athletes themselves have strong beliefs and are vocal about them. Whether RTS was right or wrong to pull the clip is debatable, but it certainly ignited a firestorm of controversy and highlighted the intense sensitivity surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, even on the slopes of the Winter Olympics. It’s a reminder that even seemingly neutral spaces can become battlegrounds for deeply held convictions.
