Breaking: Will Trump's Peace Push Succeed With Saar's Critical Visit?!
Current Affairs 17 February 2026

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar will be representing Israel at President Trump's "Board of Peace" meeting in Washington this week, his office confirmed earlier today. This comes as a bit of a surprise, given the initial buzz around Prime Minister Netanyahu potentially attending. But alas, Saar it is, and he's expected to lay out Israel's position on, well, everything, at the Thursday session.

Breaking: Will Trump's Peace Push Succeed With Saa...

The "Board of Peace," for those just tuning in, is a relatively new initiative spearheaded by Trump, ostensibly to deal with international conflicts. Originally, it was pitched as a way to oversee the Gaza truce and the massive reconstruction efforts needed there after the recent conflict. However, it seems the scope has broadened considerably, leading some to speculate whether Trump is trying to create a sort of alternative United Nations. That’s a pretty bold move, if true.

Meanwhile, Hamas is already weighing in. They’re urging the newly formed board to put pressure on Israel to halt what they claim are ongoing ceasefire violations in Gaza. Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem didn't mince words, asserting that the "war of genocide against the Strip is still ongoing," citing a litany of woes including killings, displacement, and starvation. Strong words indeed.

It's interesting to see the rapid expansion of the Board of Peace's mandate. From a focus on Gaza to tackling "various international conflicts" is a pretty significant leap. And of course, the inclusion of certain figures and nations is raising eyebrows. For instance, the proposed inclusion of Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and Qatari diplomat Ali Al-Thawadi on the "Gaza Executive Board" – which operates under the Board of Peace – hasn't exactly thrilled Netanyahu's office. To put it mildly.

Adding another layer of complexity, the Board of Peace apparently extended an invitation to Vladimir Putin. Given Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine, that decision alone has sparked considerable criticism, especially considering the reported $1 billion membership fee. Look, I understand trying to bring everyone to the table, but that's a tough one to swallow for many. Saar's attendance, juxtaposed with these other elements, makes for a potentially very tense and fascinating week in Washington. We'll be watching closely.
