Classic arena shooter Unreal Tournament 2004 has risen from the digital grave! Yes, you read that right. This much-loved FPS is now available to download for free, all thanks to the dedication of a group of fans and, crucially, the blessing of Epic Games themselves. And the best part? The game has received its first patch in over 20 years!
Unreal Tournament 2004 Returns FREE! Epic SHOCK Re...
For those of you who remember the glory days of PC gaming, Unreal Tournament 2004 was a titan. As Eurogamer once put it, the "mother of all first-person shooters." With its massive maps, intense 32-player Onslaught mode, and the exciting addition of vehicles, it was a recipe for FPS mayhem. I personally sunk countless hours into this game back in the day, and I'm not ashamed to admit it. The fast-paced action and the sheer variety of weapons kept me hooked for years.
But, as with all good things, official support for Unreal Tournament 2004 eventually ended. In 2022, Epic terminated its legacy online services and, sadly, pulled the game from digital storefronts. It felt like the end of an era. Or so we thought.
Turns out, the community had other plans. The fan group OldUnreal, known for their work resurrecting the original Unreal and Unreal Tournament 1999, took on the ambitious project of bringing UT2004 back to life. Their goal? To patch it with bug fixes, implement quality-of-life improvements, and then release it for free. All with Epic's approval, mind you. That's how it should be done, right?
And now, that day has finally arrived. As reported by PC Gamer, Unreal Tournament 2004 is available to download right now. Simply head over to the OldUnreal website, and Windows users can grab the newly released installer. This clever piece of software downloads the original UT2004 disc image from OldUnreal's servers, extracts the contents, installs the game, and automatically patches it to the latest version. Linux and macOS users are directed to the group's Github page for instructions.
"Please note that this is the first public patch for Unreal Tournament 2004 in over 20 years," writes Stijn-volckaert, project manager (and professor of computer science, no less!) in the patch notes. "We have implemented numerous fixes and improvements, written a new SDL backend for Linux and macOS, and even a new renderer. We have also migrated the entire codebase to modern build systems. Some new bugs may have slipped in!" He's honest, I like that.
So, there you have it. The "mother of all first-person shooters" is back, and it's free! With so many remakes and reboots happening these days, it's fantastic to see a classic game like UT2004 get a new lease on life through the passion and dedication of its fans. Maybe it's time for all of us to revisit a few video game classics, and what better place to start than right here?
