Ukraine-Russia Talks COLLAPSE! What Happens Next Will Shock You!
Current Affairs 18 February 2026

Well, folks, it looks like the road to peace in Ukraine is proving to be as bumpy as a dirt track in the Donbas. The second day of negotiations in Geneva between Russia, Ukraine, and the US wrapped up pretty quickly, lasting only two hours, and unfortunately, without any significant breakthroughs to report. That's a bit of a downer, especially after US envoy Steve Witkoff had suggested a hint of optimism. But you know how these things go.

Both the Russian and Ukrainian delegations characterized the discussions as "difficult," and Ukrainian President Zelensky himself described the negotiations as "not easy." This isn't exactly surprising, is it? These guys are miles apart on some fundamental issues. As Umerov put it, "This is complex work that requires alignment among all parties and sufficient time." Translation: We're not even close.

Remember the Abu Dhabi talks back in January? Those US-brokered meetings actually led to a prisoner exchange, the first in months. There's a glimmer of hope there, right? Zelensky hinted that another swap might be in the works, which would at least be a positive step, even if it doesn't address the larger conflict. Small victories, I suppose.

Now, Trump, who has been pushing for a diplomatic solution, seems to be getting a little impatient. He reportedly said Ukraine had "better come to the table, fast." Zelensky, understandably, didn't take too kindly to that, calling it "not fair" that his country should be the one pressured to compromise. You can see his point, can't you? They're the ones being invaded, after all.

It's been four long years since Russia's full-scale invasion, and the core issues remain unresolved. Russia still wants full control of the Donbas region, which includes Donetsk and Luhansk. Kyiv has consistently rejected this demand, because it would mean giving up sovereign territory. And let's be honest, surrendering those heavily fortified cities and that long defensive line in Donetsk would leave Ukraine incredibly vulnerable. A lot of Ukrainians believe it would just be inviting another invasion down the line.

Zelensky even told Axios that any plan to hand over the Donbas would be rejected by Ukrainians in a referendum. Another major sticking point? The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. It's a powder keg waiting to go off, and it's caught right in the middle of this mess. So, yeah, "difficult" seems like an understatement. The path to a "just peace," as they say, is still a long and winding one, and whether they'll ever reach that destination remains to be seen. I'll keep you posted.
