Poland SUES Russia?! Reparations Demand Stuns World! What Happens Next?!
Current Affairs 18 February 2026

Poland is apparently getting ready to open another can of worms, this time setting its sights on Russia with a potential lawsuit demanding reparations for, as they put it, the lingering "Soviet influence." Think of it as a sequel to their very vocal (and very large) claim against Germany for World War II damages, clocking in at a cool €1.3 trillion. Remember that whole ordeal? Well, it seems Warsaw isn't stopping there.

Poland SUES Russia?! Reparations Demand Stuns Worl...

According to the Financial Times, this isn't just idle chatter. Polish President Andrzej Duda hinted at this back in 2022, suggesting Moscow could be next in line for a compensation claim. Of course, Russia has been quick to dismiss these demands, labeling them as straight-up Russophobia and political maneuvering. You can practically hear the eye-rolling from Moscow.

Bartosz Gondek, who heads up an institute tasked by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk to look into these supposed "historic Russian crimes," told the FT that the investigation is going to be much broader than their previous work on Nazi atrocities. He played it coy about whether the amount sought from Russia would surpass the €1.3 trillion they're after from Germany, calling it a "long-term project." Given the complexities involved, I'd wager it's going to be quite the undertaking.

The Russian response? Well, it was… colorful, to say the least. Maria Zakharova, the Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, suggested Poland should be provided with "a link to a video of the opera ‘Ivan Susanin’." It's a reference to a story about a peasant who supposedly led a Polish army into a swamp, ultimately saving the future Tsar. Talk about a historical burn! She even quipped about unpaid bills from the 17th century, involving a Polish woman and pretenders to the Russian throne. It's safe to say Moscow isn't taking this too seriously, at least publicly.

It's all a bit of a tangled web, really. Russia has consistently stated that any attempts to revise the outcomes of World War II or diminish the Soviet Union's role in defeating fascism are simply unacceptable. Where this lawsuit goes, nobody knows. But one thing is for sure: This move will certainly continue to strain relations between Poland and Russia. And frankly, given the current geopolitical climate, that's the last thing anyone needs.
