Alright, Elder Scrolls fans, brace yourselves. We’ve got some potentially exciting news straight from the top – Todd Howard himself. It seems Bethesda is planning a return to its roots with The Elder Scrolls 6 after recent titles took a walk on the wild side, creatively speaking.
Elder Scrolls 6: Howard's SHOCKING Promise After S...
Howard, in an appearance on the Kinda Funny Gamescast (a spot I always enjoy listening to, by the way – good folks over there), dropped some hints about the future of the franchise. He essentially said that both Fallout 76 and, more recently, Starfield, represented a bit of a departure from the core Bethesda RPG formula. You know, the one where you're knee-deep in a richly detailed world, poking around in every nook and cranny, uncovering secrets and generally having a grand old time getting gloriously lost? Yeah, *that* Bethesda.
Specifically, Howard acknowledged that those games were "a little bit of a creative detour from kind of that classic Elder Scrolls, Fallout, where you are exploring a world in a certain way." Now, I don't know about you, but that sounds like an admission that maybe, just maybe, they strayed a *little* too far from what made those games so beloved in the first place. And honestly, as much as I appreciate Bethesda trying new things, I think a lot of us long-time fans have been itching for that classic experience again.
The good news is, according to the Kotaku report summarizing Howard's appearance, Bethesda is aware of this. Howard went on to say that they are "coming back to that classic style that we’ve missed, that we know really, really well." This is music to my ears. Imagine Tamriel, but with the benefit of modern technology and all the lessons Bethesda has learned over the past decade. The potential is staggering. While Starfield offered a massive universe, sometimes all you really need is a meticulously crafted world that feels lived-in and breathes history.
Of course, it's important to remember that game development is a long and winding road. Things can change. Promises can be broken (we're looking at you, Peter Molyneux… just kidding... mostly). But Howard's words offer a glimmer of hope for those of us who crave that classic Bethesda magic. We'll be keeping a close eye on The Elder Scrolls 6 as it continues its development. And if they really are going back to their roots, well, color me cautiously optimistic.
