Buldak Battle! Samyang Fights Back Against Counterfeit Chaos!
Current Affairs 19 February 2026

Samyang Foods, the South Korean powerhouse behind the fiery Buldak ramyeon that’s set taste buds ablaze worldwide, is taking a proactive stance against a growing problem: counterfeit products. The company announced Thursday plans to register the English trademark for "Buldak," a move aimed at protecting its brand and curbing the spread of imitation noodles flooding global markets.

Buldak Battle! Samyang Fights Back Against Counter...

This isn’t just about protecting a name; it's about safeguarding a legacy. Samyang intends to officially file the trademark application with the Ministry of Intellectual Property later this month, solidifying its exclusive rights to the "Buldak" moniker in English. This is pretty crucial, considering the alarming rise of copycat versions threatening to dilute the brand's value and disrupt international exports. I've personally seen some pretty dodgy-looking imitations popping up in Asian grocery stores, and frankly, it's concerning.

The interesting wrinkle here is that the Korean term "Buldak" itself isn’t currently trademarked in South Korea. Back in 2008, the Intellectual Property High Court ruled the term had become too generic, essentially losing its distinctiveness as a trademark. This ruling opened the door for other companies to use the term, which, as you can imagine, has led to a whole host of problems.

And those problems are widespread. We're talking about counterfeit Buldak popping up in China, across Southeast Asia, even in the United States, and increasingly in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. The sheer volume of fakes is staggering. Adding insult to injury, reports have even surfaced about North Korean-made products mimicking Buldak packaging being distributed within China. It's a complex, multi-faceted issue that needs a serious solution.

The company has been fighting this battle for a while now. Last month, Samyang Foods Vice Chairman Kim Jung-soo addressed the issue, revealing that while they've registered trademarks in 88 countries, they're currently embroiled in trademark disputes in a whopping 27. The surge in imitation products really took off in the early 2020s, coinciding with Buldak Bokkeum Myeon’s explosion in popularity, fueled in no small part by viral food challenges.

Since its humble beginnings in 2012, Buldak ramyeon has sold over 9 billion units, generating revenue exceeding 5 trillion won (that’s about $3.44 billion!). The extreme spiciness, originally just a marketing gimmick, became a cultural phenomenon, catapulting the brand to global fame. This immense success has propelled Samyang Foods' annual sales past the 2 trillion won mark for the first time since its founding in 2025.

"Securing the English name 'Buldak' as a registered trademark in Korea will significantly bolster the company's ability to effectively address trademark infringements on the international stage," a Samyang Foods official stated. It's a critical step, and hopefully, one that will bring some much-needed protection to this iconic and, let's be honest, ridiculously spicy brand.
