Arkheron, a Battle royale title from Bonfire Studios and Drimage, is poised to shake up the genre with its unique blend of mechanics. Okay, I know what you’re thinking: “Another battle royale? Seriously?” But trust me on this one. While the battle royale aspect might seem familiar, it's almost the *least* interesting facet of this isometric PvP action game, which feels like a shooter infused with Hades-like elements. Color me intrigued.
Arkheron BR: Is THIS the Game That Will Finally De...
Set to launch this year on PC, Arkheron pits 15 teams of three players against each other in a dark fantasy tower. The goal is simple: be the last team standing on the top floor. I had a chance to play a two-hour hands-on digital preview, and let me tell you, reaching that final floor proved to be seriously challenging. But don’t despair! The good news is the game's demo, launching as part of the February Steam Next Fest, offers another chance to ascend and see if you can conquer the tower.
The lore of Arkheron revolves around mystical avatars, customizable with various options. These avatars wield the weapons and gear of Eternals, essentially god-like beings whose loot becomes accessible as players climb the tower. Think powerful artifacts and weapons of unimaginable power. During a Q&A, Bonfire Studios understandably remained tight-lipped about post-launch progression and seasonal updates, but I did learn that Arkheron will feature a rotating roster of 10 Eternals out of the 12 available at launch. This is a key element that will hopefully keep the gameplay fresh.
Each Eternal utilizes different weapon types, from ranged to melee, along with stat-boosting amulets and crowns. But here's where it gets really interesting: equipping two or more pieces of loot from the same Eternal grants a game-changing set bonus. This encourages players to actively seek out matching gear, creating a compelling loot hunt within the Battle royale framework. I noticed this immediately, and it made me want to push just a *little* further to find those matching pieces.
As Eternal gear sets rotate in and out of Arkheron's live loot pool – found in chests scattered throughout the tower's dungeon-esque floors and dropped by AI-controlled enemies – players will constantly need to adapt their tactics. This rotation is crucial because it ensures no single "meta" lasts forever, constantly fostering experimentation and forcing players to think on their feet.
While set bonuses are limited to two-piece combinations for standard stat buffs, equipping a complete Eternal set unlocks an ultimate ability, transforming the player into that Eternal. This provides a massive boost, granting increased damage, health, and more. It's a high-risk, high-reward situation that adds a whole new level of excitement to the late-game battles.
Arkheron clearly encourages teamwork. Players can easily mark beneficial gear for their teammates, and if a teammate finds a duplicate item, they can upgrade the original to the next tier of rarity and power. This adds a layer of strategic depth beyond the typical battle royale formula, rewarding coordinated play and communication.
The isometric viewpoint features a rotating camera, which actually makes the on-screen reticle feel more like a third-person shooter than a Diablo-esque action RPG. Attacks go where the reticle points, requiring players to account for range and abilities. This approach elevates the combat beyond your standard run-of-the-mill PvP action. It takes some getting used to, but it ultimately feels more engaging.
Advancing to the next floor requires entering a circular room and surviving until teleportation occurs. However, only one team can advance per room, leading to chaotic but strategic battles against other trios vying for the same opportunity. It's a brilliant choke point that forces conflict and provides tense moments.
With a magical storm closing in and environmental hazards like giant worm-like demons (yes, really!), 3v3 fights quickly demand immense teamwork. The winning trio utilizes abilities, attacks, and positioning to their advantage. I’m cautiously optimistic about Arkheron. It's got a lot of potential, and I'm eager to see how it evolves.
