Spain is about to trade its umbrellas for sunglasses, folks. After what feels like weeks of non-stop storms, the Iberian Peninsula is gearing up for a seriously warm spell. And not just a little warmer, we're talking potentially record-breaking temperatures for February. Get ready to ditch those winter coats!
Spain Weather SHOCKER! Warmth Arrives SOONER Than ...
According to Meteored, a strong anticyclonic ridge – basically a big area of high pressure – is moving in and will dominate the region starting this weekend. This means blue skies, sunshine, and temperatures that are just plain weird for this time of year. Forget the rain; we're talking about a total weather U-turn.
Monday, February 23rd, is shaping up to be the real standout. Forecasters are predicting a warm air mass could push temperatures a full 10 degrees Celsius (18 degrees Fahrenheit!) above the usual average. That’s a massive jump! Think about it – you're walking around in a t-shirt in late February. Unheard of, right?
Most inland areas are looking at temperatures soaring 8 to 10 degrees Celsius above normal. Some regions might even see even bigger jumps! It's very likely that many provincial capitals will hit or even exceed 20°C (68°F) on Monday. Time to dust off the picnic basket, maybe?
Now, let's talk specifics. The southeast, particularly Murcia, is expected to be scorching. They might even get close to, or surpass, the region's February record of 29.4°C (84.9°F), set back on February 26th. Seriously, that's summer weather! Across the peninsula, the Canary Islands, and even inland Mallorca and Menorca, temperatures will be unseasonably high, more like April or May than February.
And the Canary Islands aren't getting left out of this heatwave. A warm air mass is headed their way from Africa, potentially carrying Saharan dust with it. Expect hazy conditions and, thanks to something called the foehn effect, some areas could even see daytime highs of 30°C (86°F) or higher. That's tanning weather, people!
Of course, there's always a catch. Coastal areas along the Mediterranean, the Gulf of Cadiz, and some parts of the Balearic Islands might stay a bit cooler. The sea breezes will be influenced by the still-chilly Mediterranean waters, creating a pretty sharp contrast between the coast and inland areas. So, if you're near the beach, don't expect quite the same level of heat as your friends just a few kilometers inland.
So, there you have it. Spain is about to experience a taste of spring way ahead of schedule. Enjoy it while it lasts, because who knows what Mother Nature has in store for us next! Time to book that beach trip - or maybe just a rooftop terrace visit will do. Get ready for sunshine!
