Metaverse SHOCK: Is This the End of VR as We Know It?!
Gaming News 21 February 2026

Meta is making some serious changes in its Metaverse game, folks. The company just announced it's splitting Horizon Worlds, its big social and gaming platform, from the Quest VR headset. Now, I remember when Horizon Worlds was supposed to be the shining star of Meta's metaverse ambitions, the place where we'd all hang out in virtual reality. But things don't always go as planned, do they?

Metaverse SHOCK: Is This the End of VR as We Know ...

This shift comes on the heels of some pretty hefty losses within Meta's Reality Labs – the division responsible for all things mixed reality. We're talking billions here, not just a few stray dollars. CNBC reported those losses hit a staggering $80 billion. Ouch. And while Meta did lay off over a thousand Reality Labs employees back in January, they still have a pretty sizable team working on this stuff. It makes you wonder what's *really* going on behind the scenes.

Now, before everyone starts writing VR's obituary, Meta is saying they're still committed to VR headsets. Samantha Ryan, VP of Content at Meta Reality Labs, made it clear that they’ll continue to support external developers through "strategic partnerships and targeted investments." Which is corporate speak for "we're not giving up entirely, but we're hedging our bets." Sounds about right.

The interesting thing is that Horizon Worlds actually saw a bit of a resurgence last year when Meta launched a mobile app version. Apparently, that mobile version brought in a whole bunch of new users who were drawn to the social gaming aspect, *without* needing a VR headset. Honestly, it makes sense. Not everyone wants to strap a screen to their face to hang out with friends. The success of the mobile app seems to be a big reason why Meta isn't just shutting down Horizon Worlds completely. Instead, they’re pivoting, focusing on the mobile crowd. Smart move, perhaps?

So, what's next for Meta? Well, it seems like they're putting more of their speculative investment eggs into the smart glasses basket, alongside their continued commitment to VR hardware, of course. Only time will tell if this new direction for Horizon Worlds will pay off, or if Meta's Metaverse dreams will continue to… evolve. Let's just say I'm keeping a close eye on this one.
