Ouch. Sounds like someone just delivered a eulogy, but this time it's for a whole video game franchise. Chris Stockman, the original design director for the beloved Saints Row series, has publicly stated what many fans have feared for a while now: he believes the franchise is "dead." It’s a harsh assessment, but coming from someone so intimately involved with its initial success, it definitely carries weight.
Saints Row Franchise DEAD?! Dev's Shocking Stateme...
Now, things get a little more nuanced, and frankly, a bit sad. It seems Stockman has tried to offer a lifeline, some kind of path forward for the series, but to no avail. He revealed on Discord to a fan that Embracer Group, the current IP holder, has essentially "ghosted him." That's never a good sign, and it paints a picture of a company either unwilling or unable to breathe new life into the Saints Row universe. "I get the sense that Embracer has zero ability to do anything with it," Stockman confessed. "I wish things were different. I tried my best to offer a path forward, but they've ghosted me." It almost sounds like he's speaking from a place of genuine disappointment, which I can definitely appreciate.
The grim prognosis isn't Stockman's alone, either. Matt Karch echoed similar sentiments, suggesting a lack of direction and vision behind recent projects. "They didn't know what they were building," Karch stated. "They didn't have any real direction. It couldn't last." Karch even questioned the likelihood of future funding after what he bluntly called "that disaster." Ouch, again. You can feel the frustration there.
All of this, of course, stems from the lukewarm reception to the 2022 Saints Row reboot. I remember playing it myself, and while it wasn't a complete train wreck, it certainly didn't capture the magic or outrageous fun of the earlier entries. As we noted in our own review at the time, it was a game that "won't set the world alight, but there's a punchy game here with some pleasant surprises." The problem is, "punchy" and "pleasant" aren't enough when you're dealing with a franchise that once defined over-the-top open-world mayhem.
So, is this really the end for Saints Row? It's hard to say definitively. The video game industry is full of surprises, and stranger things have certainly happened. But with key figures like Stockman and Karch expressing such pessimistic views, and with Embracer Group seemingly unwilling to engage, the future of the franchise looks bleak, to say the least. Maybe it's time to accept that some stories, no matter how beloved, simply reach their natural conclusion. A little sad, but maybe it's better than dragging it out for the sake of it.
