UConn's Shocking Comeback! What Will This Win Mean For The Huskies?
Sports 22 February 2026

The UConn Huskies, still smarting from a mid-week upset at the hands of Creighton, shook off any lingering disappointment with a solid 73-63 victory over Villanova on Saturday night. It wasn't always pretty, but a dominant second-half performance proved to be the difference maker for the No. 5 ranked team.

UConn's Shocking Comeback! What Will This Win Mean...

Alex Karaban led the scoring charge for UConn with 12 points, followed closely by Tarris Reed Jr.'s 11. Braylon Mullins chipped in with a valuable 10 points off the bench. You could tell the Huskies were determined to right the ship after that surprising loss to Creighton – a game many expected them to win comfortably. This win against a tough Villanova squad definitely helps ease the sting.

Villanova, meanwhile, saw Tyler Perkins top their scoring chart with 15 points, with Matt Hodge contributing 13. The Wildcats, under the guidance of first-year coach Kevin Willard, entered the game riding a six-game winning streak. That streak, however, came to a screeching halt in Storrs. They just couldn’t find their rhythm from beyond the arc, shooting a dismal 6 for 24 from three-point land. Those kinds of numbers simply won't cut it against a team as talented and well-coached as UConn.

This wasn't just any game for UConn. They're not just aiming for a high seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament; they're practically fighting for a No. 1 seed. And while one loss doesn't derail their entire season, it certainly adds pressure. Beating Villanova, especially after already defeating them earlier in the season, is a crucial step in solidifying their resume. Speaking of which, their record against Villanova is something else – eight wins in their last nine meetings. It seems like UConn just has Villanova's number.

For Villanova, despite the loss, there's still plenty of reason for optimism. Coach Willard has done a remarkable job in his first year, positioning the Wildcats to potentially end a three-year NCAA Tournament drought. He's also on the verge of surpassing Jack Kraft's record for most wins by a first-year coach at Villanova – Kraft went 21-7 back in 1961-62. With four regular-season games remaining, it's almost a certainty that Willard will break that record. While they couldn't pull off the upset in Connecticut, the Wildcats are still in a good spot as we head toward March Madness.
