Ukraine Under Fire: Russia's Massive Assault—What Will Happen Next?!
Current Affairs 22 February 2026

Another night, another brutal Russian assault. Overnight, Ukraine faced a staggering barrage of nearly 300 drones and around 50 missiles, according to Ukrainian officials. The scale of this attack is frankly terrifying, and the human cost is already being felt acutely. While air defenses managed to intercept a good number of the incoming weapons, the sheer volume meant that many still got through, inflicting damage and, tragically, claiming lives.

Ukraine Under Fire: Russia's Massive Assault—What ...

The Kyiv region bore the brunt of the strikes, with emergency services reporting one person killed. Think about that for a moment. Just going about your daily life, and then... this. Rescue teams are still sifting through the rubble, having already pulled eight people, including a child, from destroyed buildings. Fires raged across five districts in Kyiv's suburbs. I can only imagine the scenes of devastation there this morning. The village of Putrivka in the Fastiv district sounds particularly hard hit, with emergency crews desperately trying to free those trapped.

The south of Ukraine hasn't escaped either. In the Odesa region, energy infrastructure was specifically targeted. This is a recurring and deeply worrying trend. The strikes sparked significant fires, which thankfully have been extinguished, but the damage is done. Targeting energy grids, especially as winter approaches, is a calculated act designed to inflict maximum suffering on the civilian population. It's just... callous.

Ukraine's air force reported intercepting 274 drones and 33 missiles. An impressive feat, no doubt, but the numbers also tell a grim story. Fourteen missiles and 23 drones still managed to find their targets, impacting 14 different locations. And, chillingly, the fate of three missiles remains unknown. That's something that will keep you up at night, I can tell you.

This latest wave of attacks comes nearly four years after Russia launched its full-scale invasion. It's a constant reminder of the relentless pressure Ukraine is under. The increasing focus on energy infrastructure in recent months is clearly aimed at disrupting power and heating, especially as the weather turns colder. It’s a strategy designed to wear down the Ukrainian people and break their spirit.

Separately, in Lviv, an explosion resulted in one death and 25 injuries. President Zelenskyy stated that this incident was unrelated to the Russian attacks, and authorities have arrested someone in connection with it. So, while Ukraine deals with the ongoing Russian aggression, they're also facing internal challenges. It's just one more layer of complexity in an already incredibly difficult situation.

Of course, Russia has its own narrative. Their defense ministry claims to have destroyed 86 Ukrainian drones overnight. And in Luhansk, a Russian-occupied city in Ukraine, Moscow-installed leader Leonid Pasechnik claims that Ukrainian drones struck an oil depot, injuring a security guard and igniting a fuel tank. It’s always worth taking these claims with a healthy dose of skepticism. The information war is as fierce as the fighting on the ground, and truth is often the first casualty.
