Moscow Airport Shutdown: Drone Attacks Escalate! What Happens Next?
Current Affairs 22 February 2026

Moscow's skies were anything but clear this past Sunday as all four of the city's international airports – Domodedovo, Vnukovo, Zhukovsky, and Sheremetyevo – faced temporary shutdowns. The culprit? A wave of Ukrainian Drone attacks, according to Russian officials. It’s a stark reminder that the conflict, now entering its fourth year, continues to spill over borders and disrupt civilian life.

The Russian civil aviation authority, Rosaviatsia, cited safety concerns as the primary reason for the flight suspensions. Honestly, it’s hard to argue with that. Imagine being a passenger, knowing that just a few miles away, air defense systems are actively engaged in shooting down incoming drones. Not exactly the most relaxing pre-flight experience.

Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin took to social media to confirm the interceptions, stating that air defenses had successfully downed 11 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) approaching the capital. He delivered the news in a concise, almost matter-of-fact manner, which, I suppose, is the official tone one adopts in these situations. Still, the sheer number – eleven drones in such a short period – is alarming. It speaks to a significant escalation in the frequency and intensity of these attacks.

While Moscow was dealing with incoming drones, Ukraine reported its own overnight ordeal: a barrage of drone and missile attacks from Russia, specifically targeting Kyiv. Ukrainian officials claim that Russia launched nearly 300 drones and 50 missiles, a truly staggering number. They also reported a relatively high success rate in neutralizing these attacks, but unfortunately, at least one person was killed, and others were injured.

The tit-for-tat nature of these attacks is a disturbing trend. Moscow routinely accuses Kyiv of launching drone strikes on its territory, and in turn, Russia continues its own aerial assaults on Ukraine. It's a cycle of escalation that seems to have no end in sight. The Ukrainian perspective, of course, is that these actions are necessary to defend themselves against Russian aggression. I get it, but at what cost? Each attack, each interception, each life lost only deepens the wounds of this conflict.

As the war drags on, it's easy to become numb to the headlines. But these airport closures, these drone interceptions, these civilian casualties – they're not just data points. They are real consequences of a conflict that is increasingly impacting the lives of ordinary people on both sides of the border. I fear we're only seeing the beginning of a long, drawn-out period of instability and escalating violence.
