Kim Jong-Un's Power Play: What's REALLY Happening in North Korea?!
Current Affairs 23 February 2026

Okay, so North Korea’s been up to its usual business – a little bit of political theater, a little bit of nuclear saber-rattling, and a whole lot of… well, North Korea. Kim Jong Un, the supreme leader himself, has been re-elected as general secretary of the Workers’ Party. This isn’t exactly shocking news, is it? It's about as surprising as finding kimchi at a Korean BBQ.

Kim Jong-Un's Power Play: What's REALLY Happening ...

The news, dutifully reported by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), stated that the decision to keep Kim in power was unanimous. Unanimous, huh? I mean, you wouldn't expect any dissenting voices at a North Korean political gathering, would you? It’s probably safer to clap enthusiastically and pretend you agree with everything. I can only imagine the awkward silence if someone dared to raise a hand in opposition.

But here's the kicker. KCNA also added that under Kim's "benevolent" leadership (my words, not theirs, although I'm sure they'd agree), the country's nuclear "war deterrence" has been "radically improved." Right, because nothing says "peaceful intentions" like a bunch of nuclear weapons pointed at your neighbors. It's a classic North Korean move – simultaneously claiming to be developing nukes for self-defense while also, you know, flexing its military might to the rest of the world. I've always found this logic a bit... twisted.

What does all this mean in the grand scheme of things? Well, probably not much that's new. Kim Jong Un remains firmly in control, and North Korea will continue to do its thing, which involves a mixture of isolation, propaganda, and nuclear posturing. The international community will likely continue to issue strongly worded condemnations, and the cycle will repeat itself. I almost wonder if they even listen anymore; after so many years of the same routine, it must sound like background noise at this point.

It's hard to say what the future holds for North Korea, especially given its opaque nature. But one thing is clear: Kim Jong Un isn't going anywhere anytime soon. And his focus on nuclear weapons, for better or worse (and let's be honest, it's mostly for worse), remains a central pillar of his regime. We just have to hope that the rhetoric doesn't escalate into anything more dangerous. Because, frankly, nobody needs that.
