Puerto Rico is heading into the World Baseball Classic with a hunger to win, but this time around, they're doing it with a squad that looks a little different than what we're used to seeing. Think less "dream team" and more "gritty underdog," and you're on the right track. Manager Yadier Molina, no stranger to pressure himself, has a real task ahead of him: piecing together a winning formula from a roster that, while talented, is missing some serious star power.

Let's be frank, the absence of infield heavy hitters like Francisco Lindor, Carlos Correa, and Javier Baez is a blow. It's tough to lose that kind of talent. Insurance issues are a headache for everyone, even at this level, it seems. But, you know what? This isn't the time for excuses. Molina, a guy who's hoisted the World Series trophy twice, knows a thing or two about winning. He's got to find a way to get the most out of what he has. The ultimate goal is still clear: bring home that first WBC title for Puerto Rico.
One of the big questions surrounding this team is going to be their offense. Can they generate enough runs, and more importantly, can they get on base consistently enough to really compete with the powerhouses out there? They're going to need some of those veterans to really step up and provide that leadership and clutch hitting. Guys like Nolan Arenado (yep, he's switched allegiances from Team USA), Martin Maldonado, and Christian Vazquez – they've been there, done that, and they know what it takes to win in big moments. That experience could be invaluable.
The pitching staff, though, is where things get really interesting. Veteran Seth Lugo, who just missed out on a Cy Young award last year, along with Fernando Cruz, who had a solid year with the Yankees, and top prospect Elmer Rodriguez, form a pretty intriguing core. How Molina deploys them will be crucial. It's all about finding the right matchups and getting the most out of each guy. I'm particularly excited to see what Rodriguez can do on this stage – he's got the potential to be a real difference-maker.
Now, let's talk about that infield. With Arroyo stepping in for Lindor at shortstop and Castro bringing his versatility to the table, it's a different look for sure. Cortes, coming off a strong season, gets a chance to shine. And of course, Arenado switching over to honor his mother is a great story. It adds another layer of passion to this team. Overall, you can't count Puerto Rico out. They might not be the favorites on paper, but they've got the heart, the leadership, and the pitching to surprise some people. It's going to be a fun tournament to watch, that's for sure.
