Vancouver's gaming scene is known for its resilience, and news of a new studio always brings a spark of excitement. This week, that spark comes from New Radical Games, a venture spearheaded by industry veterans from the sadly defunct Radical Entertainment and Hothead Games. While closures are always a tough pill to swallow, seeing talent regroup and refocus is undeniably uplifting.
Ex-Radical, Hothead Devs Unite: What Game-Changing...
The driving force behind New Radical Games is CEO Ian Wilkinson, a name that should ring a bell for anyone familiar with Radical Entertainment's history. Wilkinson co-founded Radical back in 1991, leading the studio through its heyday before selling it to Vivendi Games in 2006. After a short retirement, he resurfaced at Hothead Games in 2009. Partnering with him is Tim Bennison, taking on the role of COO. Bennison also boasts a history with Radical, having served as Executive Producer and VP of Technology there. More recently, he was COO at Capcom Game studio Vancouver. It's a solid leadership team, bringing decades of experience to the table.
The formation of New Radical Games comes on the heels of Hothead Games' bankruptcy filing in December 2024, a tough blow for the Vancouver development community. Hothead, known for quirky and beloved titles like the Deathspank series and Penny Arcade Adventures, had an 18-year run. In a poignant LinkedIn post following the closure, Wilkinson revealed that Hothead had a triple-A project prototype ready to go, but unfortunately, securing publishing contracts proved impossible. It's a harsh reminder of the volatile nature of the game development business.
So, what's on the horizon for New Radical Games? While the official website doesn't spell out specific projects just yet, the meta description hints at a specialization in remastering classic games. Imagine breathing new life into forgotten gems, updating visuals, audio, and gameplay for modern consoles and PCs. This isn't just about slapping a new coat of paint on old assets; it's about carefully preserving the essence of what made those games great while making them accessible and enjoyable for today's audiences. It's a niche with huge potential, if done right.
Beyond remastering, the website also lists services including full game development, mobile and console development, co-development, and porting. It seems New Radical Games is positioning itself as a versatile studio, capable of tackling a range of projects. Whether they'll focus on original IPs or stick to revitalizing classics remains to be seen. However, with the experience and passion of Wilkinson and Bennison at the helm, there's definitely reason to be optimistic about what New Radical Games will bring to the gaming landscape. Keep an eye on this one – I think they'll have some exciting announcements soon.
