Well folks, another State of the Union address is in the books, and this one was... long. Like, historically long. President Trump took to the podium on Capitol Hill last night, a mere nine months away from what are shaping up to be some seriously pivotal midterm elections, and delivered what can only be described as a full-throated defense of his policies and a sharp rebuke of the Democratic party.
Trump's SOTU: Fiery Defense or Divisive Attack? Cr...
The evening kicked off with the usual pomp and circumstance, the President making his way down the aisle. There were smiles and handshakes for his allies, of course, but things got a little frosty as he passed the Supreme Court justices. You could practically feel the tension in the air, especially considering the High Court just slapped down a chunk of his trade war tariffs last Friday. Ouch.
Honestly, things could have gotten a lot uglier. Remember how the President publicly trashed the justices who ruled against him, calling them "fools and lapdogs of the radical left"? Yeah, he somehow managed to keep it civil last night, at least on the surface. Though I’m sure the justices weren’t thrilled. I wonder what was going through their minds as they sat there!
The evening wasn't without its drama, though. Representative Green got the boot for... well, let's just say he wasn't a fan. And then there was the guy in the hat – a clear violation of the House's decorum rules. It's moments like these that really highlight just how fractured our political landscape has become. This used to be a somewhat unifying event, a cherished Washington ritual. But let's be honest, last night felt anything but.
Frankly, I doubt anyone changed their minds about anything based on what the President said. The speech, clocking in at nearly two hours, was very much a red-meat offering for his base. A clear vision of what he thinks America should be, but one that many see as deeply exclusionary. He painted a picture of a nation under siege, needing strong borders and tough trade deals. It was a familiar message, and one that's clearly resonating with a segment of the population. But for the rest of us? It was just another night in Trump's America, full of division and political theater. And a very, very long speech.
