Ouch. Just when things seemed to be gaining momentum, news breaks that Full Circle, the studio behind the highly anticipated (and already in early access) free-to-play Skate. reboot, is undergoing layoffs. It's never good news to hear about talented developers losing their jobs, and the announcement, released earlier today, is definitely a somber one.
Skate 4 Developer SHOCK LAYOFFS! EA's 'Long-Term F...
According to Full Circle, these layoffs, impacting an unspecified number of employees, are intended to "better support" the "long-term future" of the game. Corporate speak, I know, but it’s the line they're sticking to. The statement is heartfelt, at least, acknowledging the contributions of those affected. "The teammates affected are talented colleagues and friends who helped build the foundation of Skate.," the studio said. "Their creativity and dedication are deeply ingrained in what players experience today. This decision is not a reflection of their impact, and we’re committed to supporting them through this transition." You have to hope that support is meaningful.
The free-to-play Skate., which launched into Early Access back in September 2025 across PC and consoles, has apparently seen "tens of millions" of players try it out. That's a pretty impressive number, so the decision to restructure and downsize comes as a bit of a surprise. It makes you wonder if the initial projections for the game's performance weren't quite met. Or perhaps EA, ever the corporate behemoth, is tightening the purse strings. It wouldn't be the first time.
EA and Full Circle are trying to reassure fans, promising that they will collaborate more closely with the community to "move faster, listen more closely, and deliver consistently." They say this restructuring is to "better support skate.’s long-term future and focus the team on the things that matter most to you." Whether that translates to a better game experience remains to be seen. It's a classic PR move, of course – promise improvements after announcing bad news. But maybe, just maybe, it’s genuine. I certainly hope so. The Skate. franchise has a dedicated fanbase, and it would be a shame to see this reboot falter.
Full Circle is forging ahead with development, and a separate post last week detailed plans for Season 3, promising new features, cosmetics, game modes, and more. So, the content pipeline seems to be intact, at least for the near future. The real test will be whether these changes truly lead to a more focused and polished game, or if they are simply a band-aid on a deeper wound. Let's keep our fingers crossed that Skate. can land this one.
