Havana Claims US "Terrorist Infiltration": What Happens Next?!
Current Affairs 26 February 2026

Havana is alleging a serious incursion, claiming to have identified what they call "terrorist infiltrators" who arrived by speedboat from the United States. This follows a deadly shootout last week between Cuban border guards and a U.S.-flagged vessel, a clash that's quickly escalating tensions between the two nations.

Havana Claims US "Terrorist Infiltration": What Ha...

According to Cuba's Interior Ministry, the speedboat, registered as FL7726SH in Florida, was intercepted about a nautical mile off the northern coast of Villa Clara province. The official account states that the guards were simply attempting a routine identification check when the occupants of the boat allegedly opened fire, wounding the commander of the Cuban patrol craft. The border guards then returned fire, resulting in the deaths of four individuals and injuries to six others.

It's what Cuban authorities reportedly found on board the speedboat that's fueling the "terrorist infiltration" narrative. The Ministry claims to have recovered assault rifles, sidearms, homemade explosives (Molotov cocktails, no less!), ballistic vests, and even telescopic sights and camouflage uniforms. They are asserting this gear points to a planned operation far beyond simple smuggling or illegal entry.

Cuban officials have so far identified one of the deceased as Michel Ortega Casanova, and they are working to identify the remaining three. All six of those detained have been named, and reportedly, some are already on Cuba's "national list" of individuals wanted for alleged involvement in past violent or terrorist acts. Interestingly, all participants are believed to be Cuban nationals who reside in the United States. You have to wonder what motivated them to take such a risk.

Adding another layer to the story, authorities also announced the arrest of Duniel Hernandez Santos. He allegedly confessed to being sent ahead from the US to coordinate the landing of this armed group. That certainly indicates a level of planning and organization beyond a spontaneous act.

Washington, as you might expect, is denying any involvement. Senator Marco Rubio, for one, has stated the vessel did not belong to the US Navy or Coast Guard. He's calling for an independent investigation to ascertain exactly what happened. "Let's have our own information on this, and we will find out exactly what happened," Rubio told reporters. It's a wise move; jumping to conclusions rarely helps in situations like this. It seems likely we will continue to see a back and forth between Cuban and US officials as this develops.

This situation is certainly complex, and frankly, a bit alarming. A deadly firefight, accusations of terrorism, and the potential for further escalation - it's a recipe for serious diplomatic trouble. I'll be keeping a close eye on how this unfolds, particularly regarding any independent verification of Cuba's claims and the US response. Stay tuned.
