Trump's Olympic "Joke" Sparks Fury: Did He Just Overshadow US Victory?!

Hilary Knight, the powerhouse captain of the U.S. women's ice hockey team, isn't letting a controversial comment by former President Donald Trump steal their thunder. She's calling out what she describes as a "distasteful joke" that she says is overshadowing the incredible achievements of female athletes at the Winter Olympics. And honestly, I can't blame her.

Trump's Olympic "Joke" Sparks Fury: Did He Just Ov...

Knight, a true legend with five Olympic medals (two gold, three silver) to her name, made her feelings known after a historic moment: the U.S. snagged gold in both men's *and* women's ice hockey at the Milan-Cortina Games. It was a first for the country, a reason to celebrate, and then… this.

Apparently, Trump called the men's team after their victory, offering congratulations and an invitation to his State of the Union address. So far, so good, right? Well, he then reportedly added he’d have to invite the women's team too, "or he 'probably would be impeached.'" Ugh. The women's team, unsurprisingly, declined the invitation to attend Tuesday's address in Washington D.C.

"It was sort of a distasteful joke, and unfortunately that is overshadowing a lot of the success, the success of just women at the Olympics carrying for Team USA and having amazing gold medal feats," Knight told ESPN. And she's right. It's a shame when political chatter distracts from these incredible athletes who dedicate their lives to their sport.

Now, the men's team has caught some flak for seemingly laughing at Trump's remark. Knight, however, is coming to their defense. "I think there's a genuine level of support there and respect. That's being overshadowed by a quick lapse," she explained. She believes their camaraderie is being unfairly judged because of a fleeting moment, and I tend to agree. It's easy to get caught off guard in situations like that.

"The guys were in a tough spot, so I think it's a shame this storyline and narrative has kind of blown up and [is] overshadowing that connection and genuine interest in one another and cheering each other on," she added. It's a fair point. We shouldn't let one awkward moment erase the bigger picture of teamwork and mutual respect.

Knight, wrapping up her Olympic career at 36, leaves behind a legacy. She holds the record for most goals scored by any U.S. player, male or female, with a staggering 15. Her message is clear: "Women aren't less than, and their achievements shouldn't be overshadowed by anything else other than how great they are." The U.S. women's ice hockey team earned that gold medal with grit and determination, staging an amazing comeback victory over Canada. Let's focus on that.
