Turkey's Kids Conquer America! World Finals Stun the US!
Education 26 February 2026

Elementary school students are heading to the US to represent Turkey at the world finals of a prestigious competition, and it's not your average spelling bee. These young minds tackled some seriously complex global issues, proving that the future is in capable hands, even at such a young age.

Forget playtime and cartoons for a moment, because these kids are delving into topics like climate change, artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and even the collapse of digital identities – the very things that are dominating headlines and shaping our future. It's not just adults who should be worried about these things, right? These kids are stepping up.

The students, hailing from FMV Florya Işık Elementary School, secured their spot at the international stage after a stellar performance in the Future Problem Solving (FPS) Turkey 2026 "Creative Writing" category. Out of 450 students from 51 schools across the country, their science-based scenarios stood out for their powerful imagination, scientific foresight, ethical considerations, and systems analysis. Honestly, I was blown away reading about it.

Their scenarios paint vivid pictures of potential futures. Imagine this: Tokyo in 2080 experiencing a "time fracture," with clocks rewinding and people disappearing. Or a fully autonomous ship quarantined in Istanbul's port due to an unknown biological threat in 2145. These aren't just random ideas; they're grounded in research and a deep understanding of complex systems.

One scenario explored a biotechnological plant designed to be a green solution, but ultimately disrupting the planet's delicate ecological balance. Another chillingly considered what happens when digital identity systems fail, leaving millions unrecognized by hospitals, banks, and schools. The jury was impressed by the narratives, sure, but also by the logical cause-and-effect relationships, the analysis of societal impacts, and the development of potential solutions. It's more than just storytelling; it's critical thinking at its finest.

This success wasn't accidental, of course. It was the result of a rigorous preparation process. Sixth and seventh graders were selected through a commission and engaged in weekly individual and group studies from September 2025 to January 2026. They dove into academic articles, scientific content, and analytical videos to develop their scenarios, guided by dedicated coaches Erdinç Yakasız and Bilal İsmail Şirin. It's a testament to the power of focused learning and mentorship.

The Future Problem Solving program, created back in 1974 by Dr. E. Paul Torrance, aims to equip students with the ability to anticipate future problems and devise creative, analytical solutions. And judging by the work of these young Turkish students, it's clearly working. It's inspiring to see young people engage with these complex issues. It gives me hope for the future, frankly. Good luck to them in the world finals – Turkey is rooting for you!
