It's been a year of utter chaos down at Selhurst Park, a season so turbulent you'd be forgiven for thinking Crystal Palace were constantly on the verge of imploding. Key players gone, a manager seemingly at war with the board, and fans regularly voicing their displeasure. Yet, incredibly, the Eagles could be on the cusp of something special: a run deep into the Europa Conference League.
Palace Chaos to Glory?! Unbelievable Turnaround St...
Friday's draw, scheduled for 13:00 GMT, will determine their last-16 opponents in a competition they entered as, somewhat bizarrely, one of the favorites. I say bizarrely because this is a team that, let's be honest, has lurched from one crisis to another.
Let's rewind a bit. Last May, they were lifting the FA Cup, a truly historic moment. Three months later, the Community Shield followed. Palace looked like they were ready to dominate. But then the wheels started to come off. Eberechi Eze, their creative spark, departed for Arsenal. Then, the saga surrounding Marc Guehi – almost joining Liverpool before eventually ending up at Manchester City – definitely unsettled things. And don't forget Jean-Philippe Mateta’s botched move to AC Milan due to a failed medical – another blow.
However, the biggest shock was the announcement from Oliver Glasner that he would be leaving at the end of the season. He accused the board of, essentially, abandoning the team. The relationship seemed irreparable. Even now, despite still being in charge (and overseeing wins!), banners are being unfurled calling for his head. Honestly, it's been a soap opera.
Despite all this, wins against Zrinjski at Selhurst Park, thanks to goals from Maxence Lacroix and Evann Guessand, secured their passage to the next round. It was a professional job, nothing spectacular, but enough to get the job done.
Glasner, when quizzed about his future, remains defiant. "100%," he asserted about his job security. "There's so much noise, sometimes you really don't understand it." He did concede that perhaps some of his interviews haven't helped matters, but he also insisted on his commitment and the team's strong league and Conference League position. It seems that despite the storm surrounding him, internally, the dressing room is solid.
And he has a point. They are currently 13th in the Premier League, a comfortable 10 points clear of the drop zone and, perhaps more surprisingly, only three points off a potential European spot for next season. The players, according to Glasner, are still fully behind him, which he views as the most crucial factor. He highlighted the “great togetherness” within the squad and staff, a sentiment echoed by the sporting director and chairman. It appears that even they are somewhat bemused by the negative attention, considering this could potentially be one of Crystal Palace's best Premier League seasons ever.
Now, the Europa Conference League. West Ham and Chelsea have both triumphed in this competition recently, proving that English teams can take it seriously and win it. Can Palace add their name to that list? Given their chaotic season, it would be a truly remarkable achievement.
