Current Affairs 27 February 2026

Calp's Old Town is about to get a whole lot brighter – in a wonderfully old-fashioned way, that is. Mark your calendars for 2026, because La Nit Encesa, the town's enchanting candlelight night, is making a return, promising an evening of magic and community spirit.

Calpe Aglow! Candlelight Nights Return: A Magical ...

Organized by the Calp Town Council, La Nit Encesa, which translates to "The Lit Night," is more than just a pretty spectacle. It's a deliberate effort to boost cultural tourism and, more importantly, encourage both visitors and locals to rediscover the captivating beauty of Calp's historic quarter. Imagine: winding alleyways, those gorgeous stone facades reflecting flickering light, and charming plazas all bathed in the soft, warm glow of thousands of candles. It's enough to make you want to ditch the modern world and step back in time.

This year, the organizers are adding a particularly interesting element: "The Street of Art." This isn't just some static display – it's an open-air creative space where local artists will be actively painting and exhibiting their work live. I love this idea! It brings art directly to the people, allowing them to witness the creative process firsthand and engage with the artists themselves. It's so much more engaging than simply strolling through a gallery.

The magic won't stop with the art. Expect live performances scattered throughout the evening, too. A roaming theatre show is scheduled to begin in Plaça Mosquit, snaking its way through the historic center before culminating in a storytelling performance right in front of the Ajuntament Vell (that's the old town hall, for those not in the know). Then, as the night deepens, live music will fill Plaza de la Villa, offering spectators an intimate open-air concert experience under the soft light. Think cozy, romantic, and utterly unforgettable.

Local councillor Guillermo Sendra is really pushing for community involvement, encouraging residents, shop owners, and restaurateurs to get in on the act. The call is out to decorate balconies, windows, and terraces with candles, turning the entire town into a unified canvas of light. This collective effort isn't just about aesthetics; it's about strengthening the sense of community that really defines Calp and makes it such a special place to visit, or call home. It's this spirit that will really elevate La Nit Encesa.

La Nit Encesa is fast becoming one of Calp's most distinctive and beloved cultural celebrations. It's a night where history, art, and community seamlessly converge in a sea of light, transforming the old town into a sensory experience you won't soon forget. I, for one, am already looking forward to it!
