Champions League Draw: Dream Ties, Disaster Awaits?!

Champions League Draw: Dream Ties, Disaster Awaits?!
Sports 27 February 2026

Alright folks, the Champions League draw is in, and let me tell you, it's a doozy! We've got some absolute blockbuster ties on the horizon. Chelsea, fresh off their Club World Cup win (ahem, *some* people actually care about that trophy), are set to lock horns with current Champions League holders Paris St-Germain. That's going to be a spicy one, no doubt. PSG, always the bridesmaid never the bride until recently, will be desperate to prove their European dominance isn't a fluke. Chelsea, well, they're Chelsea. You never really know what you're going to get, do you?

And speaking of spicy, hold on to your hats, because Manchester City and Real Madrid are going head-to-head *again*! I swear, these two are becoming like some sort of recurring European nightmare for each other. This will be their fifth straight season facing off in the knockout stages. You've got to wonder what Pep Guardiola is thinking. He's got to be sick of seeing that white shirt, right? Will this be the year City finally breaks through against the kings of Europe? Only time will tell.

While those two matches are undoubtedly the headliners, there are plenty of other intriguing ties to sink our teeth into. Surprisingly, despite six Premier League teams making it to the last 16, we've avoided any all-English clashes. Arsenal, currently sitting pretty at the top of the Premier League, will have their work cut out for them against Bayer Leverkusen. Xabi Alonso has his team humming along very nicely indeed.

Now, let's talk about Newcastle United. The Magpies have drawn Barcelona, and St. James' Park is going to be absolutely electric for that first leg. Imagine that atmosphere! I'm already getting goosebumps just thinking about it. It's a tough ask for Newcastle, of course. Barcelona, even in their current slightly-less-than-dominant form, are still Barcelona. But you know what? Never count out the passion of those Geordie fans. They'll give their team a massive lift.

Liverpool are off to Turkey to face Galatasaray, which will be another cauldron of noise, while Tottenham have a date with Atletico Madrid. I can already see Diego Simeone's Atletico parking the bus at every opportunity! Get ready for some tactical masterclasses, or, depending on your perspective, potentially very boring football. The first legs are scheduled for March 10th and 11th, with the return legs on the 17th and 18th. Mark your calendars, folks! And remember, the final will be held in Budapest on May 30th. I'm already clearing my schedule!

Don't forget to catch the highlights of all the Champions League action on the BBC! They've got you covered on iPlayer, the BBC Sport website, and the app, plus a Champions League Match of the Day special. Get ready for some late nights and plenty of talking points. This Champions League season is shaping up to be a classic!
