Harvard University, a name synonymous with academic excellence, recently found itself in a bit of hot water. The Department of South Asian Studies has issued an apology regarding a social media post promoting its Sanskrit program. The post, featuring artwork deemed insensitive, sparked outrage and accusations of bias, leading to a formal response from the university.
Harvard Apologizes! Sanskrit Image Sparks Outrage ...
The issue stemmed from an image used to advertise Harvard’s Elementary Sanskrit course. According to the Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA), the artwork displayed "blatant Hinduphobia," painting both Sanskrit and Hinduism in a negative light. Now, I haven't seen the specific image in question, but it's clear that it struck a nerve with many in the Hindu community.
In a formal statement, the Department of South Asian Studies expressed their regret. "The South Asian Studies Department deeply regrets the posting of an insensitive image in relation to our Sanskrit program," they wrote. It's a pretty straightforward apology, acknowledging the misstep. The department also took pains to emphasize its long history of teaching Sanskrit and its commitment to the language and its cultural significance. "As a department, we have a long and celebrated history of teaching Sanskrit, and we remain committed to teaching the language and the great intellectual and cultural tradition it carries,” the statement continued.
Beyond the apology, the department has promised to review its internal social media procedures to prevent similar incidents in the future. They also made sure to clarify that the controversial post had nothing to do with The Lakshmi Mittal and Family South Asia Institute, a separate entity within Harvard. I think that's a smart move – distancing themselves from any perceived connection to the offending image.
CoHNA, for their part, has accepted the apology. They've even called it "one of the rare moments where a university department has formally apologized for their Hinduphobic insensitivity." That's a significant acknowledgement. They further expressed appreciation for the respect shown toward Sanskrit, highlighting its importance as an ancient language with global influence. It's good to see that this incident has, hopefully, paved the way for a more respectful dialogue going forward. It's a reminder that even with the best intentions, cultural sensitivities need to be carefully considered, especially when representing traditions as rich and complex as those associated with Sanskrit and Hinduism.
