Göztepe's promotion hopes took a slight hit this weekend as they were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by Eyüpspor in a Süper Lig match that, frankly, felt like it lasted an eternity. The game, played in front of a packed stadium in Göztepe, had promised fireworks, but ultimately fizzled out, leaving fans feeling a little shortchanged. Click here for more details.
Göztepe Stunned! Eyüpspor Shocks with Upset Victor...
The match was by no means a thriller, but it certainly had its moments, particularly in the first half. Göztepe dominated possession for large stretches, but Eyüpspor proved to be a stubborn opponent, defending resolutely and looking dangerous on the counter. This draw sees Göztepe inch up to 42 points, while Eyüpspor is now sitting on 22.
The biggest talking point of the game came early on, when Göztepe were awarded a penalty in the 8th minute. It all started with a Cherni cross from the left, expertly headed down by Juan to Janderson, lurking just inside the box. Janderson's initial shot struck an Eyüpspor defender, leading to a corner. But then, drama! After a VAR review – because these days, what major event *doesn't* involve a VAR review? – the referee pointed to the spot. Unfortunately for the home side, Janderson couldn't convert, with Eyüpspor goalkeeper Jankat Yılmaz making a superb diving save to his left. You could feel the collective groan from the Göztepe faithful.
Göztepe continued to press, and in the 24th minute, a deflected ball landed at Juan’s feet. His pass found Cherni on the left, but the resulting cross was cleared for another corner. The pressure kept building, and around the half-hour mark, Taha Altıkardeş’s cross found Cherni again, this time just outside the box. Cherni's low shot was comfortably dealt with by Yılmaz. You got the sense that Göztepe were getting closer, but just couldn't find that decisive breakthrough.
The second half followed a similar pattern. Göztepe had a great chance in the 65th minute when Heliton rose highest to meet Cherni's corner, but his header agonizingly sailed over the bar. Then, in the 72nd minute, Juan teed up Jeferson inside the box, but again, Jankat Yılmaz proved unbeatable, saving Jeferson's shot from the right. It really wasn't Göztepe's day.
Eyüpspor, to their credit, didn't just sit back and defend. They nearly stole a late victory in added time when Emre Akbaba's attempted cross deflected off a defender and fell kindly to Rotariu. His shot was pushed away for a corner by Göztepe keeper Lis. So, a draw it ended, a result that probably suited Eyüpspor more than Göztepe. For Göztepe, it’s a reminder that nothing is guaranteed, and they’ll need to find their scoring boots again quickly if they want to secure that promotion spot.
