Khamenei 'Gone'?! Netanyahu's Shocking Claim Sends Shockwaves!
Current Affairs 01 March 2026

The already volatile situation in the Middle East has just taken another sharp turn, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declaring that Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is dead. This is a pretty bold claim, and so far, not universally confirmed. I mean, we've seen rumors fly around before, but this feels different given the source.

Khamenei 'Gone'?! Netanyahu's Shocking Claim Sends...

Netanyahu made his assertion in a video address, claiming that Khamenei's compound was struck in a “powerful surprise attack.” He stated, "There are many signs" that the Supreme Leader "is no more." Now, Iranian news agencies Tasnim and Mehr are pushing back, reporting that Khamenei is "steadfast and firm in commanding the field." So, we've got a clear discrepancy in narratives right off the bat.

Adding fuel to the fire, US President Donald Trump, in a phone interview with NBC News, chimed in saying he believed reports of Khamenei’s death were “correct.” Interestingly, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is playing it cooler, stating he is "not in the position to confirm" the claim. This divergence in opinions from major world players just complicates things further, doesn't it?

The backdrop to all this is the reported joint attacks launched by Israel and the US on Iran. Apparently, these attacks began on Saturday, with Trump stating that the objective was to "raze their missile industry" and navy, as well as to force regime change. Predictably, Iran retaliated with missile and drone strikes targeting Israeli targets and US military bases in the region. It's a tit-for-tat escalation we've seen before, but with potentially devastating consequences this time.

Netanyahu also went on to say that “thousands of targets” within the Iranian leadership would be eliminated in the coming days, and even called on Iranians to take to the streets and overthrow their government. Talk about adding insult to injury! Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told NBC that the Iranian leader was alive and well, claiming that “Almost all officials are safe and sound and alive.” He did concede they may have lost "one or two commanders," though.

Sources like Axios are reporting that Israel is specifically targeting top figures in Iran’s government and security services. The US, on the other hand, is reportedly focusing on Iran’s missile program. Moscow has strongly condemned these strikes, warning of further destabilization in the region. They described the attacks as a "premeditated and unprovoked act of aggression," designed to topple a government that refuses to bow to Western pressure. This is a situation that could easily spiral out of control, and the lack of a clear consensus on Khamenei's fate only adds to the uncertainty and danger.
