Well, folks, the global Box office is buzzing, and it's a mix of familiar faces and some surprising international hits. *Scream 7* absolutely dominated this past weekend, proving that audiences just can't get enough of Ghostface. The film carved out a massive $97.2 million opening, making it the biggest debut we've seen from Hollywood so far this year. That's right, it’s a record-breaker for Paramount and a high point in the *Scream* franchise. We'll be digging deeper into the details of its international performance soon, so stay tuned!
'Scream 7' SHATTERED! But a Dark Horse Just CRUSHE...
But hold on, because while *Scream 7* was busy slicing up the competition, the Chinese New Year releases are still putting up a serious fight. *Pegasus 3*, a racing movie that seems to be hitting all the right notes with Chinese audiences, sped into second place with a cool $50.3 million worldwide. Okay, so $806,000 of that came from domestic markets, but the real story is its performance in China. Initial reports from Maoyan are pointing to a total gross of $554.2 million – seriously impressive! It’s really interesting how culturally-specific films can find such huge success in their home territories.
Then we have *Wuthering Heights*, the latest adaptation of the classic novel, which pulled in $22.6 million. While it’s a decent drop from the previous weekend (around 41% internationally and 50% domestically), it's still holding its own. The film’s global total is now sitting pretty at $192 million, and most of that – nearly $120 million – has come from overseas. The UK, Australia, and Mexico were the top performers. Interestingly, it seems that the recent unrest in Mexico, which actually impacted moviegoing last week, has started to ease, allowing audiences to get back to the cinemas. A quick shout out to Italy with $11.5M cumulative and Germany with $6.5M cumulative.
On the animation front, *GOAT* (previously mentioned as having very little to do with goats) continues to perform well, grossing $21.3 million across 54 territories. Its global total is now a solid $130.5 million. While international markets saw a bit of a dip, domestic earnings are still strong. The Stephen Curry-produced film has some key market releases coming up soon, including Australia and China, which should give it another boost. So, overall, a fascinating week at the global Box office, with a blend of Hollywood horror, Chinese blockbusters, and international dramas all vying for attention. It just goes to show that there's room for all kinds of stories to find an audience, as long as they connect with viewers on some level.
