Okay, John Wick fans, listen up. It sounds like the upcoming John Wick game is aiming for some serious cinematic glory. Saber Interactive, the folks teaming up with Lionsgate for this project, are promising an experience that'll make you feel like you're *watching* a John Wick movie, not just playing one. Color me intrigued.
Keanu REEVES Stuns! Wick's Director Makes SHOCKING...
Saber's Chief Creative Officer, Tim Willits, dropped some interesting tidbits to IGN, and what he said really caught my attention. He argues that the John Wick films, almost inherently, *are* structured like video games. Think about it: Wick blasts his way through hordes of goons, leveling up his arsenal and skills along the way, before facing off against increasingly tough adversaries. It's practically a side-scrolling beat 'em up... just with more style and Keanu Reeves' legendary intensity.
“It's really exciting to bring that action to a video game,” Willits said. I'm taking that to mean they're focusing on a faithful adaptation of the gun-fu ballet we've come to expect from the franchise. No cheap gimmicks or wonky mechanics, hopefully. Just pure, unadulterated Wick-style mayhem. I'm personally hoping for a decent story to go along with the action, too.
Now, the details are still pretty scarce, and we don't know much beyond this general goal of replicating the movie experience. That said, understanding how the source material is structured and how to utilize that in the game could be the secret sauce to making this game a success. Personally, I’m cautiously optimistic. We've seen plenty of movie tie-in games fall flat, trying to cash in on a name without understanding what makes the source material compelling. It sounds like Saber is actually thinking about it, though.
Of course, talk is cheap. We'll have to wait and see if Saber Interactive can actually deliver on this promise of a truly cinematic John Wick experience. Until then, I'll be over here re-watching the Baba Yaga trilogy and practicing my pencil skills... you know, just in case.
