And speaking of Webb, he managed to settle down nicely after that initial bomb. He retired a dozen straight after that, which is what you expect from a pitcher of his caliber. The U.S. pitching staff as a whole did a solid job of keeping Brazil at bay for long stretches, even if they weren't exactly dominant. It's a long tournament, and you don't want to burn out your aces in the first game.

But here's the thing that really struck me: Brazil didn't quit. Even when they were down by a few runs, they kept battling. They have some other interesting stories on their roster too. You've got Dante Bichette Jr., another son of a former big leaguer, and then there's Joseph Contreras. Now, Contreras is something else.
