Team USA STUNS Brazil! What This Win Means For The World Baseball Classic!

Okay, so Team USA took down Brazil in their World Baseball Classic opener, and while the final score might suggest a comfortable win, it was anything but. I gotta say, Brazil came to play. What was supposed to be a walk in the park for the star-studded Americans turned into a genuine ballgame, at least for the first two-thirds. You could feel the tension in the stadium for a good while there.

Team USA STUNS Brazil! What This Win Means For The...

The big story, honestly, has to be Manny Ramirez Jr. Yes, *that* Manny Ramirez's son. The kid has some pop! He absolutely tattooed a couple of balls out of the park, including one off Logan Webb, who, let's be honest, is no slouch. It's not every day you see a guy light up Webb like that. Later, he took Gabe Speier deep, and Speier doesn't exactly give up a ton of homers to lefties. So, yeah, the kid's making a name for himself and clearly has some serious genes on his side. He even homered off deGrom in an exhibition game beforehand. Definitely someone to watch.

And speaking of Webb, he managed to settle down nicely after that initial bomb. He retired a dozen straight after that, which is what you expect from a pitcher of his caliber. The U.S. pitching staff as a whole did a solid job of keeping Brazil at bay for long stretches, even if they weren't exactly dominant. It's a long tournament, and you don't want to burn out your aces in the first game.

But here's the thing that really struck me: Brazil didn't quit. Even when they were down by a few runs, they kept battling. They have some other interesting stories on their roster too. You've got Dante Bichette Jr., another son of a former big leaguer, and then there's Joseph Contreras. Now, Contreras is something else. He's only 17, the youngest guy in the whole tournament, and he got Aaron Judge to hit into a double play! Seriously, imagine going back to high school after facing Aaron Judge and getting him out! The kid is committed to Vanderbilt and is projected to be a high draft pick. It just proves baseball is in good hands.

Ultimately, Team USA's talent prevailed, but Brazil showed a lot of heart and some serious potential. They proved that even a team without a ton of MLB experience can compete, especially when they have guys like Ramirez Jr. stepping up. It'll be interesting to see how they perform for the rest of the tournament.
