Seoul Goes Green! St. Patrick's Day Fest SHOCKS the City!
Current Affairs 08 March 2026

As the last vestiges of winter finally loosen their grip and the days stretch longer, Seoul is gearing up for a vibrant splash of green this weekend. The annual St. Patrick's Day Festival is back, transforming D-Cube City Plaza in southwestern Seoul into a lively celebration of Irish culture and the ever-strengthening bonds between Ireland and Korea.

This year's theme, "Seoul's Going Green," perfectly encapsulates the spirit of the event. It's not just about shamrocks and leprechauns (though you can definitely expect plenty of both!); it's about embracing community and celebrating a cultural heritage that resonates surprisingly well here in Korea. I've always found the Korean enthusiasm for international celebrations quite charming, and St. Patrick's Day is no exception.

According to Alan Leavy, chairman of the Irish Association of Korea (IAK), the driving force behind the festival, St. Patrick's Day in Seoul is all about extending Irish hospitality and fostering a sense of community. "It’s not just for Irish people," Leavy emphasized. "We really want it to be open to anyone who wants to come along, take part and enjoy themselves...it’s a great day out for the whole family and a chance to experience a bit of Irish culture.” And I can attest to that – the festival is usually a fantastic mix of locals, expats, and tourists, all soaking up the atmosphere.

The free, family-friendly festivities kick off at 1 p.m. and run until 6 p.m., offering a packed afternoon of entertainment. Think live music, traditional Irish dance performances, cultural exhibits showcasing the Emerald Isle, community booths brimming with goodies, and, of course, plenty of activities to keep the kids happy. Face painting is a must for the little ones, and there will be prizes up for grabs throughout the day. Perhaps the highlight? A best-dressed contest with a 200,000 won prize for the most stylish adult and LEGO sets for the best-dressed children. Time to dig out your greenest outfit!

Daniel Ryan will be guiding the event in English, while Bethany McMonagle will address the crowd in Korean, ensuring everyone feels included. Keynote speakers include Kim Jun-min, vice president of Daesung (the operator of D-Cube City), and Irish Ambassador to Korea Michelle Winthrop. This St. Patrick's Day will be particularly poignant as it marks Winthrop's last festival in Seoul before she moves on to a new assignment. The IAK has also extended invitations to various other embassies, so expect a sprinkling of foreign dignitaries in attendance.

But the celebrations don't end when the sun goes down! The party continues in Itaewon, Seoul's international hub, at The Craic House Bar and Restaurant. Often fondly referred to as the unofficial Irish Embassy, The Craic House will be hosting a vibrant evening of live music starting at 7 p.m., featuring performances by Radio Revolution, Soul Juice, and Honey Jam Sam. It's the perfect way to round off a day of green-themed fun and experience the true spirit of St. Patrick's Day, Seoul-style.
