Well, folks, it seems the world stage is still spinning, and wouldn't you know it, Putin and Trump were on the phone again. According to Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov, the two leaders had a chat about those ever-present hotspots: Ukraine and Iran. It's like a broken record at this point, but hey, at least they're talking, right?
Putin-Trump Phone Call: SHOCKING Details Revealed ...
Ushakov told reporters that the call, initiated by Trump, zeroed in on the rising tensions between the US and Iran, as well as those seemingly endless trilateral talks involving Moscow, Washington, and Kiev concerning the mess in Ukraine. Remember when everyone thought that conflict would be resolved quickly? Sigh.
Apparently, the dialogue was all "business-like, open and constructive." You know, the usual diplomatic jargon. They supposedly expressed a mutual desire to keep the lines of communication open. The whole shebang lasted about an hour, Ushakov mentioned. I wonder what kind of coffee they were drinking during that hour... Probably not the instant stuff.
Trump reiterated the US’s desire to see an end to the fighting in Ukraine and wanted a lasting solution. Putin, for his part, reportedly thanked Trump for the administration's ongoing attempts to play mediator. Whether that mediation actually works is another question entirely, but at least they're giving it a shot.
Putin also shared his take on the Iran situation, including details from his recent chats with leaders from Gulf countries and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. Trump, in turn, gave his own assessment, leading to a "substantive" discussion, according to Ushakov. Substantive is good, I guess. Better than trivial, anyway.
Trump later chimed in, describing the conversation with Putin as “a very good call” during a press conference. He said they discussed both the Iran war and the “never-ending fight” in Ukraine. "Never-ending" certainly feels accurate at times, doesn't it?
It’s worth noting that Putin warned just before this call that the escalating conflict in the Middle East could seriously screw up global oil and gas supplies. He even suggested Gulf oil production could halt altogether. Not exactly a rosy picture he's painting.
Moscow, for its part, has been pretty critical of the US and Israeli actions in Iran, condemning the bombing campaign as "premeditated and unprovoked aggression." And while Putin didn't give a full public statement on the whole operation, he did call the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei a "cynical violation" of morality and international law. Strong words, to say the least. Guess we'll just have to wait and see where all this leads us. Hopefully, it won't be somewhere too unpleasant.
