Universal Pictures is apparently betting on the power of hairspray and arena rock nostalgia. The studio just landed the rights to a Bon Jovi biopic after a good old-fashioned bidding war, signaling a surge of interest in the band’s early days. I'm guessing a whole lot of people are ready to relive their 80s glory days, myself included! We're talking about the guys who gave us anthems like "Livin' on a Prayer" and "Wanted Dead or Alive," songs practically guaranteed to get a crowd singing along, even if they're a little off-key.
Bon Jovi Biopic: Shocking Secrets of Early Days Re...
Deadline was the first to break the news, and it’s got me thinking about the sheer impact Bon Jovi had on the music scene back then. The film will focus on the band's formative years, charting their ascent to superstardom in the 1980s. Of course, it all started with a Jersey boy with a dream, Jon Bon Jovi (born John Bongiovi), who somehow managed to combine a rockstar look with an approachable, everyman quality that fans absolutely ate up. That, combined with incredibly catchy tunes, was a recipe for world domination, plain and simple.
The screenplay is in the capable hands of Cody Brother, who previously worked on "Drudge" and "Killing Satoshi." A bit of an eclectic resume, but hopefully, he can capture the energy and ambition that defined Bon Jovi's early years. Producing the film are Kevin J. Walsh ("Manchester by the Sea," "Napoleon") and Gotham Chopra ("Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story"), so there's definitely some serious filmmaking talent involved. Universal's Jacqueline Garell will be overseeing the project, which means someone's keeping a close eye on all the details – and probably making sure the music rights are all squared away! It's always the little things that can trip these projects up.
And here's the kicker: Jon Bon Jovi himself is reportedly on board. This is huge, as it likely means access to the band's extensive music catalog, ensuring the movie has the authentic soundtrack we all expect. No word yet on casting or a release date – the burning questions on everyone's minds, I'm sure – but you can bet there’ll be a frenzy to find the right actors to portray the band members. Think about the pressure of playing a young Jon Bon Jovi! I can only imagine the audition process. In the meantime, Bon Jovi is still out there doing their thing. Their latest album, "Forever," dropped this year, proving they're not ready to hang up their guitars just yet. Looks like this biopic will have plenty of fuel to draw on.
