Hantavirus Cruise Nightmare: Cleaning Fails?! Passengers at Risk!
Health 26 May 2026

A cruise ship, the Hondius, is now under a microscope – and a rigorous cleaning schedule – after being linked to a deadly Hantavirus outbreak. The operating company, Oceanwide Expeditions, announced Tuesday that the ship is getting some extra TLC in the form of intensified cleaning protocols. This comes before the ship's scheduled return to its home port, which is near Rotterdam in the Netherlands.

Hantavirus Cruise Nightmare: Cleaning Fails?! Pass...

The need for these additional sanitation measures came at the suggestion of the GGD, which is the local health authority in Rotterdam. You see, the Hondius was forced to dock there a bit earlier than planned last week. While Oceanwide Expeditions hasn’t explicitly said *why* the cleaning is being stepped up, you can read between the lines, right? The health authority is keeping mum for now, too, declining to comment on their own recommendation.

This whole situation is pretty serious, to be honest. Even the World Health Organization (WHO) is involved. Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus mentioned on X (formerly Twitter, for those still catching up) that a total of 12 Hantavirus cases have been reported to the organization, along with three tragic deaths. The most recent death occurred just a few weeks ago, on May 2nd. Hantavirus is no joke.

Typically, hantaviruses spread through contact with infected rodent droppings – think inhaling dust that’s been contaminated. Yuck! But, the particular virus at play here, the Andes virus, is even more concerning. In rare cases, it can actually transmit between humans. That’s what makes this situation a bit more unnerving. Thankfully, public health officials are reassuring everyone that the risk to the general public from this outbreak remains low. Still, I wouldn't want to be on that ship without knowing they've done everything possible to decontaminate it.

Initially, Oceanwide Expeditions seemed to be downplaying the potential impact on the Hondius's schedule. They had previously stated that they didn't anticipate any disruptions. The ship was supposed to head off on an Arctic cruise departing from Keflavik, Iceland, on May 29th. But things have changed. In Tuesday's statement, they clarified that "all voyages from 13 June onwards will proceed as scheduled. No further disruption to the sailing schedule of m/v Hondius is expected.” So, that's good news for anyone with a cruise booked from mid-June onward. But, clearly, they needed to take a pause and get this cleaning situation sorted out first.

Hopefully, this thorough cleaning process will put everyone's minds at ease and ensure a safe journey for future passengers. It's a stark reminder of the importance of public health measures, especially when dealing with potentially dangerous viruses. I know I'll be watching this story closely.
